corporate big brotherness

I hate all the corporate big brother shit that goes on in the workplace these days.
They just decided that they are going to block virtually every web-mail service in existance, anything related to alcohol, anything related to gambling, websites like myspace, youtube, etc.
everything. maybe the lounge is still new enough that it's not on any block lists but OT is blocked.

I just found out that I can't even get on my universities e-mail system to check my mail before I head off to class. That poses a real problem for me and management doesn't seem to care, even if it's for the betterment of thier own employees. what a joke.
They are also monitoring all internet usage. HR is going to be getting reports of every site you visit and for how long you are on each page.

the only thing that does is to foster an environment of mistrust, and create the sort of "us against them" environment between management/HR and thier employees.
If you can't trust someone you hire, why did you hire them in the first place?

Don't like it, work elsewhere. I don't see anyone forcing you to stay there

As much as that sucks, I can't really blame them. You are being paid to work and you shouldn't be surfing the web all day. How many times do you pick up a newspaper in the middle of the work day and start reading at your desk? Probably none because you KNOW it makes it look like you aren't working (which you wouldn't be). Since surfing is more stealthy than reading the paper, but is just as non-productive, they feel they have to block you from using it.

ps. And by you I don't mean just you. But any employee.

Wow, that sucks. I can understand them wanting to block certain sites that people spend too much time on , especially if it's eating into their networks capabilities or significantly lowering production

But seems retardedly anal to block stuff like campus email, etc..

That wasn't really the point. And , with all due respect, you don't see anything, or know anything about my position or why I might be keeping this job.

Right but isn't a better measure of someones productivity looking at whether or not they are doing what they were hired to do? I mean what do you care if someone takes a 5 minute break every now and again if they are doing a good job? Or why would you fire someone for doing a good job?

If so-and-so isn't doing a good job, or isn't pulling thier weight, fire them. You don't need to waste thousands of dollars on an internet monitoring system to tell you what you already know.

I am going to have to do something like that. I actually need to be able to get to my school e-mail for my night classes. I live 40 miles from work.. it's not like I can just drive home to check e-mail and then drive back. Thje douche bags won't even make an exception for me, even though I am taking classes and paying out of my own pocket so that I will have more skills to help the company. Sorry. no exceptions.

Morons.

From the IT point of view, as I am one of those who installs such a policy when ordered, it is usually not that they care what you are looking at. Most could give two shits about your hotmail.

While keeping the 'worker bees' productive is important most of the time they are worried about their bandwidth and the bill that comes a long with the non work stuff. Also, when you take 50 employees all browsing stuff, streaming in youtube, downloading mp3s, it puts a fairly good load on the connection slowing the work stuff down.

Personally I am ok with messenger programs... streaming video sites, if i owned the business, would not be allowed. kazaa and that wouldn't be either. Other than that, whatever as long as the work gets done.

If you don't use your computer enough that you CARE what your screensaver is, then that is sad.....

I can't remember the last time I changed a screesaver.

I would not restrict the ability to browse OT, LL, or other message boards. They have been a great resource for me in the past and I think it should be available to those who use them for such purposes. Others (old fuckers who run the show today) don't feel that way and those sites use more bandwidth that you think. Especially when there are dozens of people doing it at the same time and they click on the 56kdiaf thread.

I am also not one to hunt down those who view nws material. I have caught quite a few people at my current place of work with 1-2gb of videos that would be considered in appropriate. Personally i dont think someone should get fired for being a pervert when they get their laptop home, so i dont report them. Baby jesus knows I watch that stuff at home too. They do turn bright red in the face and become VERY friendly to me after I caught them though. If someone does see it and get offended though, they would be canned at Dos Equis, Inc. Don't need any law suits on the plate.

One guy had his "My Music" folder loaded with videos such as xxxtitf.mpg. His laptop crashed and we had a backup of it from like a month previous. I went to restore some stuff and I was like... "So..... do you want that My Music folder back?" He is like ...no i didn't have anything important there.
