Iran's Navy Attacks and Boards Romanian Rig in Gulf

Aug. 22 (Bloomberg) -- Iran attacked and seized control of a Romanian oil rig working in its Persian Gulf waters this morning one week after the Iranian government accused the European drilling company of ``hijacking'' another rig.

An Iranian naval vessel fired on the rig owned by Romania's Grup Servicii Petroliere (GSP) in the Salman field and took control of its radio room at about 7:00 a.m. local time, Lulu Tabanesku, Grup's representative in the United Arab Emirates said in a phone interview from Dubai today.

what are the romanians doing there anyway?

it's not like you can just secretly set up an oil rig overnight without anyone knowing.

Who knows, but.. sounds like there's some accusation about them potentially hijacking another rig.

Has there been any violence or deaths?

Seems like some sort of dispute at the moment. The US coast guard fires warning shots when boats don't comply I'm sure. If it's their water they can do what they'd like.

Don't like how they treat companies, don't move your company there. Isn't that what the Libertarians say?

LONDON — An Iranian warship has captured a European-operated oil rig in the Gulf.

Diplomatic officials termed the action "extreme" and unprecedented.

so apparently the UAE and Iran are at odds with who owns the waters. the romanians were working there in conjunction with the UAE. Iran suddenly decided it wasn't happy and thought they'd take it over.

Part of me wonders if this is another thing they can agree to 'give up' or 'share' in order to be allowed to continue enrichment on their own soil.
