Thousands of Marines face involuntary recalls because of Iraqi Civil War

This is the first time the Marines have had to use the involuntary recall since the early days of the Iraq combat.

What's next, a draft?

Drafts take 2-6 years to get a solid man power and nobody in the admin/military wants a draft.

INTERVIEW - Iraq security adviser says violence levels falling
By John Chalmers

TOKYO (Reuters) - The level of violence in Baghdad has fallen sharply since July thanks to troop reinforcements and the new government's efforts to reconcile warring Shi'ites and Sunnis, Iraq's national security adviser said on Tuesday.

Mowaffaq al-Rubaie insisted that the sectarian and insurgent bloodshed that has seized Iraq was not a civil war, a description U.S. President George W. Bush's administration has strenuously avoided in the face of mounting casualties.

Iraq's National Security Advisor Mowaffak al-Rubaie speaks during an interview in Tokyo August 22, 2006. The level of violence has fallen sharply in Baghdad since July thanks to troop reinforcements and the new government's efforts to reconcile warring Shi'ites and Sunnis, al-Rubaie said on Tuesday.

"This is absolutely not a civil war," Rubaie told Reuters in an interview during a visit to Japan. "Al Qaeda tried for that for three years and failed miserably. But it has created a crack between Shias and Sunnis."

"The surge was only until mid-July," he said. "The number of attacks is down from mid-July by 45 percent and extra-judicial murders ... are down 35 percent since mid-July. We're there, we're definitely on the mend."

The violence, much of it blamed by U.S. officials on Shi'ite death squads, poses the greatest threat to the three-month-old government of Shi'ite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, whose national reconciliation plan critics say has so far failed to contain sectarian tensions between Shi'ites and minority Sunnis.

But Rubaie said the government's strategy of reaching out to those who have taken up arms was working.

"We tried the stick for three years. We need a big carrot and a smaller stick," he said, adding that even "die-hard elements" were now approaching the government with conditions for peace.

The Iraqis and Americans have changed their tactics. So far it seems to be working. Nothing wrong with pointing it out. Unless you just don't want to hear anything positive that is.

I do too. It puts a cost on war for the entire country. Right now its "screw those guys the volunteered". Its wrong and people are making policy with that thought in their brain. Then they send people out to do their dirty work which has very little or nothing to do with this country's freedom.

I really want nothing to do with a draft. I love how liberals will claim that this recall is a "back door" draft, all of these people were under contract

Problem is, the violence has nearly doubled since January. So, while it's nice to see that it's somewhat slowing down, it's gonna take a bit longer to see whether a significant trend is developing, or whether or not it's a momentary pause (which while still good, isn't anything to hang your coat on)

Yeah, but it's still unvoluntary. Meaning, we don't have an all volunteer army filled with only people who "want to be there".

We should be using the active military branches for our war overseas, not people who signed up to play paintball on the weekends and help with hurricanes and other natural disasters.

I want a draft because I feel that a good majority of americans would stand up and fight if it was for the freedom of this country.

If you want a true way to see if american people want to go to war, make everyone elligable to be trained to go fight in it.

They're not being "involuntarily recalled" they're being asked to fulfill their obligation.

I was involuntary called to active duty as well, you don't get to pick your fights. They decided they wanted to be there when they signed their contract knowing full well that after their 4 year active duty commitment they still had another 4 year of inactive reserve commitment.

no the majority of the country would not stand up, if this was the truth than people would be knocking down the doors of recruiters.

Conscription would lower morale and lower morale means a not as good fighting force. If I force you to work for me at the wage I pick or I give you the option to work for me at the wage I offer, where would you work harder?

I would fight to defend the country. The Iraq conflict is not defending this country and I wouldn't want nothing to do with it.
