Global Warming Opinion: Scientific, Academic, and Corporate

I’d like to challenge the global warming deniers to present evidence supporting their claims that there are just as many (or more) experts that agree with the global warming deniers (or that are neutral) as there are scientists that agree with the alarmists.

If there is a significant number of experts that disagree or are neutral about the scientific consensus, that ratio is not reflected in the number of organizations that have made or endorsed statements regarding anthropogenic climate change.

My independent research into this subject indicates that out of 747 scientific, academic, corporate, industrial, and/or research groups that have made or endorsed statements or positions on the subject, 743 of those organizations endorse views typified by those individuals characterized as global warming alarmists. 4 organizations could be characterized as either neutral or as of yet unspecified, and no organization endorses the views typified by those individuals characterized as global warming deniers.

-

“a·larm·ist n. A person who needlessly alarms or attempts to alarm others, as by inventing or spreading false or exaggerated rumors of impending danger or catastrophe.”

alarmists - Definitions from Dictionary.com

-

“Denialism is a term used to describe the position of governments, business groups, interest groups or individuals who reject propositions that are, or are claimed to be, strongly supported by scientific or historical evidence, and who seek to influence policy processes and outcomes accordingly.”

Denialism - Information from Reference.com

-

In respect to global warming and this discussion, “alarmists” refers to those who believe that the climate is getting warmer, that human activity is significantly contributing to the current warming of the climate, and that the risks of inaction are real.

“Deniers” refers to those who believe that the climate is not getting warmer, or that human activity is not significantly contributing to the warming of the climate, or, that current climate change poses no impending threat.

My research to compile this list began August 2007, and ended February 2008.

Here are the scientific, academic, corporate, industrial, and/or research groups that agree with the global warming alarmists, followed by a list of those that are neutral, and then finally a list of those that agree with the deniers:

30. American Geophysical Union

“Mid-continent warming will be greater than over the oceans, and there will be greater warming at higher latitudes. Some polar and glacial ice will melt, and the oceans will warm; both effects will contribute to higher sea levels. The hydrologic cycle will change and intensify, leading to changes in water supply as well as flood and drought patterns. There will be considerable regional variations in the resulting impacts… The unprecedented increases in greenhouse gas concentrations, together with other human influences on climate over the past century and those anticipated for the future, constitute a real basis for concern.” - American Geophysical Union, 2003

Human Impacts on Climate

About the American Geophysical Union:

“For over three quarters of a century, AGU has supplied an organizational framework within which geophysicists have created the programs and products needed to advance their science. From its beginnings as the representative of American geophysicists in the international scientific community, AGU has evolved beyond parochial boundaries of nation and discipline into an active community of over 45,000 scientists from 140 countries. AGU now stands as a leader in the increasingly interdisciplinary global endeavor that encompasses the Earth and space sciences.

AGU, a nonprofit scientific organization, was established in 1919 by the National Research Council and for more than 50 years operated as an unincorporated affiliate of the National Academy of Sciences. In 1972 AGU was incorporated in the District of Columbia and membership was opened to scientists and students worldwide.”

Statement on Human Impacts on Climate Change - American Institute of Physics

About the AIP:

“The American Institute of Physics (AIP) was founded in 1931 in response to funding problems brought on by the Great Depression. At the urging of the Chemical Foundation, which provided initial funding, leaders of American physics formed a corporation for the “advancement and diffusion of knowledge of the science of physics and its application to human welfare,” especially by achieving economies in the publishing of journals and the maintenance of membership lists.

At the time of its formal incorporation in 1932, the AIP comprised five societies with a total membership of some 4,000 individuals. A new set of Member Societies was added beginning in the mid 1960s. Today the total non-overlapping membership of the ten Member Societies is over 100,000.”

33. American Meteorological Society

“Despite the uncertainties noted above, there is adequate evidence from observations and interpretations of climate simulations to conclude that the atmosphere, ocean, and land surface are warming; that humans have significantly contributed to this change; and that further climate change will continue to have important impacts on human societies, on economies, on ecosystems, and on wildlife through the 21st century and beyond. Focusing on the next 30 years, convergence among emission scenarios and model results suggest strongly that increasing air temperatures will reduce snowpack, shift snowmelt timing, reduce crop production and rangeland fertility, and cause continued melting of the ice caps and sea level rise.” - American Meteorological Society Information Statement on Climate Change, 2007

36. UK Centre for Social and Economic Research on the Global Environment

“Coping with climate change may prove to be the ultimate test of global citizenship. Climates are no longer natural. Any climate in the future is the result of human interference with natural processes. So we can collectively make what climates we choose to create from now on. This means we all have responsibility for the consequences of climate change over the coming century. The science of climate alteration is not complete. There is still disagreement amongst scientists and analysts. This science is, however, sufficiently coherent and robust to be confident that a human-element is contributing to global warm-ing over and above any natural variation. This widely shared view reinforces the conclusion that climate futures are neither natural nor forecastable. Society is at many climate crossroads. We can choose many climate outcomes, with many different consequences, both good and bad, for people alive today, and more especially their offspring.”

125. Chevron

“At Chevron, we recognize and share the concerns of governments and the public about climate change. The use of fossil fuels to meet the world's energy needs is a contributor to an increase in greenhouse gases (GHGs) - mainly CO2 and methane - in the earth's atmosphere. There is a widespread view that this increase is leading to climate change, with adverse effects on the environment.

Climate change is a global concern. Nation by nation, coordinated frameworks are essential. Fragmented actions have the potential for undue economic cost without effectively mitigating climate change risk.”

126. The Weather Channel

“The bottom line is that if greenhouse gas emissions continue to increase, a significant warming trend is expected to also continue. The ability to adapt will be crucial. Potential outcomes range from moderate and manageable to extreme and catastrophic, depending on a number of factors including location and type of effect, and amount of greenhouse gas emissions. Not every location and its inhabitants will be affected equally, but the more the planet warms, the fewer "winners" and the more "losers" there will be as a result of the changes in climate. The potential exists for the climate to reach a "tipping point," beyond which radical and irreversible changes occur.”

147. American Chemical Society

"There is now general agreement among scientific experts that the recent warming trend is real (and particularly strong within the past 20 years), that most of the observed warming is likely due to increased atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations, and that climate change could have serious adverse effects by the end of this century." - American Chemical Society 2007 Statement (quoted from the pdf.)

148. Business Roundtable

"According to leading scientists, there is increasing evidence that the earth's climate has been warming over the last century and increases in the earth's temperature are affecting many global ecosystems, especially the polar areas. At the same time that warming has been occurring, greenhouse gas (GHG) concentrations in the atmosphere have increased due to rising worldwide emissions of GHGs. Major sources of these emissions include the combustion of fossil fuels, tropical deforestation and other land use changes.

Because the consequences of global warming for society and ecosystems are potentially serious and far-reaching, steps to address the risks of such warming are prudent now even while the science continues to evolve. Business Roundtable supports collective actions that will lead to the reduction of GHG emissions on a global basis with the goal of slowing increases in GHG concentrations in the atmosphere and ultimately stabilizing them at levels that will address the risks of climate change." - Business Roundtable Climate Change Statement, supported by the CEO's of 149. “Climate change can act as a threat multiplier for instability in some of the most volatile regions of the world, and it presents significant national security challenges for the United States. Accordingly, it is appropriate to start now to help mitigate the severity of some of these emergent challenges. The decision to act should be made soon in order to plan prudently for the nation’s security. The increasing risks from climate change should be addressed now because they will almost certainly get worse if we delay.” - National Security and the Threat of Climate Change, C.N.A. Corp. Report, 2007 (quoted from the pdf.)

National Security and the Threat of Climate Change - The CNA Corporation

About the C.N.A. Corporation:

“The CNA Corporation is a non-profit organization that during World War II pioneered the field of operations analysis to help the Navy save lives and use its scarce resources more effectively. We have more than half-a-century of experience researching and analyzing the complex scientific, operational, and policy challenges that are facing the public sector and public decision makers.

Today's CNA Corporation—with more than 300 researchers at our headquarters and 45 analysts in the field—is the descendent of a small number of MIT scientists the Navy turned to in the early 1940s for help with the German U-boat threat.”

"We, the tenured and tenure-track faculty of the Dept. of Atmospheric Sciences of Texas A&M, agree with the recent reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that:
1. It is virtually certain that the climate is warming, and that it has warmed by about 0.7 deg. C over the last 100 years.
2. It is very likely that humans are responsible for most of the recent warming.
3. If we do nothing to reduce our emissions of greenhouse gases, future warming will likely be at least two degrees Celsius over the next century.
4. Such a climate change brings with it a risk of serious adverse impacts on our environment and society." 2007 Statement on Climate Change, Department of Atmospheric Sciences at Texas A&M

"There is now a general consensus amongst climate scientists that the Earth is undergoing significant warming, mainly as a result of human-induced emissions of greenhouse gases and landuse changes... The consequences of this temperature rise have been well-documented, but include rapid recession of mountain glaciers, rising sea levels, changing patterns and intensities of rainfall and drought events and latitudinal shifts in ecological systems." - From "Climate Change, Future Conflict and the Role of Climate Science", Royal United Services Institute Journal, 2005

GROUPS THAT ARE NEUTRAL

I found four major organizations that agree that human activity is contributing to the current warming of the climate, but whose positions as to the future effects of climate change could be characterized as either neutral or as of yet unspecified:

1. American Association of State Climatologists
2. National Science Foundation
3. National Snow and Ice Data Center
4. American Association Of Petroleum Geologists

GROUPS THAT AGREE WITH DENIERS

None.

Right now I'm having trouble clearing my ignore list, but hopefully as soon as that gets fixed, I look forward to hearing what you (and some others) have to say about my research and the evidence you have to present for your own side of the argument.

I really do appreciate you contributing constructively to the discussion on this thread, Dumpy Dooby. You're the first with the balls to do so. Thanks.
