There is nothing to prove that Pelosi said ANYTHING but the message she was given to pass on. Period.
Sfgate skewing the facts on Pelosi's trip ... how quaint. This article is once again from before her trip to Syria and doesn't discuss what she actually said. It wasn't the message she delivered, nor is it a full representation of what happened. When she asked Israel for a message they told her to not talk about issues between them and Syria. She keep pressuring and finally they said something along the lines of we won't negotiate while they're still acting like terrorists. Pelosi then gets up in front of Syria and says "I just got back from Israel and they want peace!!! Ok now take a picture of my good side, thanks!"

Wrong. She did not say that AT ALL.

If I heard you, you didn't -- you don't recall him saying that in you conversation.

PELOSI: No. What he told us was that the thrust of his statement is that Israel is prepared to go to the negotiating table; we are not preparing for war -- that was the important part of it -- we are not preparing for war; we're prepared to go to negotiation when Syria takes steps to stop its support of Hamas and Hezbollah.

SIEGEL: And you say that's what you told Syrian President Assad?

PELOSI: Well, not only just I; Tom Lantos, Henry Waxman, two strong supporters of Israel who -- we had made a very direct message to the president on that score.

Again...do you have proof she didn't give the message the Israeli's gave her?

Media Matters - Despite evidence to the contrary, Angle claimed Pelosi didn't press Syria on "serious issues"

* An April 4 Washington Post article on Pelosi's meeting with Assad reported that when Pelosi said "she conveyed a message" from the Israeli government that it "was ready to resume peace talks," she also said that she "reiterated U.S. demands that Syria stop the passage of insurgents across Syria into Iraq and stop supporting militant groups." Also, according to reporter Anthony Shadid, she said she "brought up ... the seizure of Israeli soldiers by Hamas and Hezbollah."
* An April 5 New York Times article reported that, according to members of Pelosi's delegation, they had "press[ed] the president [Assad] over Syria's support for militant groups and insist[ed] that his government block militants seeking to cross into Iraq and join insurgents there." The article also reported that Rep. Tom Lantos (D-CA), chairman of the House Foreign Relations Committee and one of the members of Pelosi's delegation, "said he asked Mr. Assad how someone 'of his intelligence and knowledge of the world could have common cause with President Ahmadinejad of Iran, who has denied the Holocaust and calls for the elimination of Israel.' "

Further, both Pelosi and the entire delegation -- which included five Democrats in addition to Pelosi, as well as one Republican, Rep. David Hobson (OH) -- issued statements regarding what the delegation said during its meeting with Assad. The delegation's statement said that it had raised the following issues with Assad:

* "Syria must also stop supporting terrorist organizations such as Hamas and Hezbollah, and must end any interference in Lebanon's internal affairs."
* "We conveyed to him Prime Minister's Olmert's overture for peace talks when Syria openly takes steps to stop supporting terrorism."
* "We requested Assad's help in freeing missing and kidnapped Israeli soldiers including: Gilad Shalit; Ehud Goldwasser; Eldad Regev; Guy Hever; Zachary Baumel; Tzvi Feldman; Yehuda Katz; and Ron Arad. And we requested the return of the remains of Eli Cohen for burial in Israel."

The delegation also stated that it "met with opposition leaders and representatives of families of dissidents" in Damascus.

Seems quite clear to me. It is nothing but a right wing attack with NO evidence.

It takes a little bit of brains to climb the ladder in this country. I credit Bush for climbing to the top...that means he's got some brains to either hire the right people to help him do that or figure out strategy to do it himself. Pelosi falls along the same lines.

Maybe someone can educate me on this. WHAT THE HELL IS SHE DOING IN SYRIA WHEN THERE ARE SO MANY PROBLEMS HERE IN THE STATES SHE SHOULD BE FOCUSING ON? It makes no sense. Congress has their lowest approval ratings EVER and this is exactly why. They obviously don't know thetir jobs. Anyone can throw links around. Frankly I don't understand how some of you have time to sit on this site all day and do it. No, I am NOT singling anyone out, so chill. Don't you people work? lol But back to the point: how many of these links are bogus? This country was founded on free thinking. Lets use our heads here and think for ourselves. Fuck ALL the partisan bullshit. I don't give a damn who gets the White House next year as long as they can run this country like I as an American want it run. I certainly don't agree with everything Bush has done. But Pelosi is a moron.

Congress has the ultimate authority to declare war, its very relevant to their positions to go abroad and be educated with the world at large

Besides, polls find people are disappointed in Congress, not at the Democratic Party, I can see why, the GOP is filibustering up a storm

Its very convenient to blame an ineffectual Congress on The opposite party than you are.

I would agree with Congressmen/women to go abroad, it is certainly not their jobs to try and broker PEACE TALKS!

There were no peace talks, she spent almost all her time relaying demands of the US that they crack down on terrorist and other flaws the State Department has stated

If all members of a party vote in unison, and there are little to no cases of ineffectualness inside the party, then how can that party be called guilty of ineffectual conduct?

So the Republican delegation that went before her shouldn't have been their either, right?

Thats my point. She spent time doing what wasn't her job at all. To Thorgrim: Are you trying to imply that the Dems haven't been ineffectual?

To The Donkey: You harp on links all the time yet don't provide one here? What Republicans went there and why? What did they do while they were there and when was this?

Sometimes there just isn't a rebuttal. Its ok to be at a loss for words. You will get over it I'm sure. And yes, the article I read, that someone posted said she was brokering peace talks.

ABC News: Lawmakers Visit Syria to Discuss Ties

http://www.netscape.com/viewstory/20...%2F&frame=true

I keep hearing you talk about how you know the issues...but you didn't know this?

The White House today lashed out at Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) for daring to visit Syria in the coming days. White House spokesperson Dana Perino:

I do think that, as a general rule — and this would go for Speaker of the House Pelosi and this apparent trip that she is going to be taking — that we don’t think it’s a good idea. …

I’m not sure what the hopes are to — what she’s hoping to accomplish there. I know that Assad probably really wants people to come and have a photo opportunity and have tea with him, and have discussions about where they’re coming from, but we do think that’s a really bad idea.

Not only are the administration’s attacks on Pelosi hypocritical, but the timing suggests they are a partisan hit. ThinkProgress has learned that a delegation of Republicans is currently in Syria. (This has not been previously reported by the press.) Why did the White House wait until Pelosi’s imminent visit to raise this issue publicly, and not make mention of the Republicans already there?

Here’s what the White House isn’t talking about:

Republican Reps. Aderholt and Wolf are currently visiting Syria. According to a congressional official on Rep. Robert Aderholt’s (R-AL) staff, Aderholt and Rep. Frank Wolf (R-VA) are currently visiting Israel and Syria.

Republican Rep. Hobson accompanying Pelosi on Syria visit. Speaker Pelosi will be traveling with a contingent of members of Congress to Syria. The delegation includes Reps. David Hobson (R-OH), Keith Ellison (D-MN), Tom Lantos (D-CA), Henry Waxman (D-CA), Louise Slaughter (D-NY), Nick Rahall (D-WV).

Moreover, as the AP reports, “Earlier this month, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Ellen Sauerbrey held talks with a senior Syrian diplomat on how Damascus was coping with a flood of Iraqi refugees, the first such talks in the Syrian capital for more than two years.”

UPDATE: Bloomberg confirms our account:

Michael Lowry, a spokesman for Representative Robert Aderholt, said that the Alabama lawmaker will visit Syria as part of a Republican delegation led by Representative Frank Wolf, a Virginia Republican. Wolf is the top Republican on the House appropriations subcommittee that funds the State Department.

Perino wasn’t available to comment about that trip.

"Pelosi is conveying that Israel is willing to talk if they (Syria) would openly take steps to stop supporting terrorism," said Olmert's spokeswoman, Miri Eisin. "But at this point the Syrian government, by openly backing terror all around the Middle East, is not a partner for negotiations."

Just curious what this means? She wasn't brokering peace talks? Get a grip dude. Thats EXACTLY WHAT SHE WAS DOING. She was brokering peace talks between Israel and Syria. Thats EXACTLY WHAT THE ARTICLE SAYS. Don't try lying here again.

As for the 2 Republicans VISITING Israel and Syria. Again, there is a huge difference between visiting and brokering peace talks. Are you serious here? You don't have a leg to stand on!

Olmert spokesman is just like any other political spokesman...a political tool

Note that in the future, Olmert would say that at that time and now currently...was fully asking Syria to be a partner in negotiations...so what they had said earlier was a lie
