He said he'd push for legislation making emissions equal to that of midsize cars which is going to basically eliminate the SUV as we know it. Power levels would have to drop to such anemic levels that the entire purpose of the vehicle would be gone. You can't lug around a 5400lb Tahoe on a 140hp I4 and expect it to last any time at all and you'd not be able to tow anything.

As President he'd force every vehicle's emission standard to that of a regular sedan like an Accord? (As he had control over the EPA he'd have some authority over that area if elected)

That would totally screw over our entire trucking transportation industry

link?

That is not what he said, he said SUV emissions, he said nothing about 18 wheeler emissions.

He said SUV emission standards would be forced to sedan size when he took office on Jan 2009?

They did it in the 1980s with the K5 blazer. My parents had a 1985 and a 1988. The horsepower ratings on the '85 are really laughable. This thing HAD to have been a complete dog.

No, how do you keep interpreting these wierd things from my words?

Again he said he would push and help author if necessary a bill cutting SUV emissions to that of the midsize sedan.

The question becomes what does he view as "necessary"?

So he made an open statement that SUVs (not trucks) should be pushed to get sedan emissions...and he'd help such a bill get along in the future as we move to be more environmentally friendly

And this is what scares everyone?

My uncle had one it was a complete dog. But that vehicle was also a full 1500lbs lighter than today's tahoe. Keep in mind that the torque ratings were far higher than 150 which is vitally important to moving a large vehicle.

Todays vehicles have double the power with about half the emissions pretty damn impressive if you ask me.

You drag around a 5200 to 5400lb tahoe with 150hp and it would totally suck not to mention your towing capacity would be almost nil.

He didn't say he "thought" they should, he didn't say he would "help" get them there he said he legislate it...you can't just flip on a switch and say get 35mpg. It doesn't work like that.

my '88 Trans Am wasn't much better, and it was a "high performance" engine ... 350 cid putting out 230hp and 330 lb-ft

With all the advancing hybrid technology, who wouldn't want to help leisure SUVs get better emission standards? Legislation can set goals, it doesn't have to set a firm time-table

I drive a >4,000lb 4Runner that come from the factory (20 years ago) with 108 hp

Max tow capacity is apparently 3500lbs as well, but I'm not going to test that.

Thats probably until the frame gets tweaked and it has little or nothing to do with engine output in most cases.

My father in law had a 1994 4runner for about 12 years. Ran like a tank but about all you could successfully tow was 3000ish to 3500lbs, after that it was nearly impossible to maintain any speed on the highway.

those running for office are going to be using private jets and buses. it's not hypocritical. they're public figures. they are fund raising. their day to day activities require it. the general public's do not.

I do not find it hypocritical.
