| Priorities come first on global warming? A California congressman R - John Campell that basically says, before spending money on global warming we should worry about immediate problems now.
If given the option between spending trillions on global warming, is there something else you'd rather the money be spent on? Cancer research, AIDS research, health care, education, defense, medicare, social security, etc. When push comes to shove how much are we really willing to spend on global warming? I'm all for cutting carbon emissions and slowing the rate of pollution. But how far should we go? A lot of politicians are pushing for plans that could very well bankrupt the US in an effort to slow global warming. Is it worth it? I would have to say no.

| Opportunity cost is something that alot of people just don't think about. That being said, the government isn't really directly spending alot on global warming. It's more a matter of passing regulations that private industry will have to adhere to. That may ultimately result in decreased profitability in some cases, but it may also open up new markets and create a new industry. We do not necesarily have to take money away from aids research to spend it on climate change research. There also comes a point where additional money doesn't help. You reach the point of diminishing returns. Even if we were to devote the entirety of the US federal budget to AIDS research, we would not have a cure tomorrow, or anytime soon probably due to the complexity of the disease. It's also a gamble. If we decided to defund climate change research and route that money to cancer research, will there be a cure discovered? What if it doesn't help? What if we defund climate change research and use the money for AIDS research but still fail to find a cure? That is a real possibility and there is an opportunity cost there as well. | ||||
