Kos once again tells his bloggers to stop being stupid

Just before the YearlyKos convention the liberal blog DailyKos came under fire for a lot of their ... overly left-leaning conspiracy style posts. Kos told his community that those kinds of posts and the attention they get degrades the quality of the blog.

Seriously, just because something online confirms your own viewpoint or prejudices or whatnot, it does not mean it's true.

Skepticism is a virtue.

Now the right-wingers are laughing at the gullibility of those who recommend Maccabee's diaries.

And they are quite justified in doing so.
Daily Kos: State of the Nation

Kos has been trying to upkeep the good reputation the DailyKos has had for so long. However, with its popularity he is now getting truthers, conspiracists and all around nutjobs.

It’s no surprise that there are serial liars and embellishers on the interwebs. What should be noted is that their lies and embellishments can be utterly transparent and repetitive, and yet be accepted as fact time and again by the audience for whom they confirm basic prejudices. Take, for example, one pseudonymous fellow at DailyKos who goes by “Maccabee.” He claimed to meet a Romanian cabbie who told him to leave Bush’s tyrannical America; he claimed to meet a Holocaust survivor who told him that Bush’s America resembles Nazi Germany; he claimed to meet another cabbie, Ugandan this time, who told him that Bush’s America is worse than Idi Amin’s Uganda; he claimed to have received a phone call from Balad, Iraq, revealing that the majority of the American Army’s mechanized strength is “out of commission”; and today, he claimed to have received a telephone call from an American aircraft carrier on deployment, revealing that the United States Navy is about to attack Iran. Oh, and he also learned that the naval rank and file detest George W. Bush, too. That “Maccabee” is a habitual liar is obvious enough: what’s more ridiculous than his fables is that they are nearly always Recommended Diaries at DailyKos. The reality-based community loves its myths — and its mythmakers.

The blogs as far as I'm aware have been deleted by Kos off the site. However, before they were deleted they constantly got very high recommendations. The DailyKos is supposed to be able to filter itself through recommendations and troll ratings, but sometimes blogs like those get bumped to the top of the charts and it ends up making Kos community look a bit foolish.

I have to say it's nice to see Kos take charge of his blog for a change and uphold some standards. It does however go against his statements of he isn't going to police his blog because it's a "democracy" which is "something the GOP doesn't understand", etc. He's shown he very clearly can take the high ranking blogs that hold all tht utter crap in them and squash them like a bug if he cares enough about the integrity of his site. And in all honesty, he probably should. Many other blogs do attempt to do some moderation and if Kos wants to keeps it's reputation it might be wise to set up a moderation team and attempt to keep an eye on the postings of his site.

Often times people recommend stuff they disagree with so it gets more involvement / discussion from the community.. a recommendation isn't always a measure of acceptance, so your overall point doesn't necessarily hold true..

..but in this case i think it certainly does.. obvious wishful thinking on the part of the 'groupthink' people who want Bush to look bad
