Whoopi Goldberg used her first day on the daytime chat show Tuesday to defend football star Michael Vick in his dogfighting case.
Goldberg said that "from where he comes from" in the South, dogfighting isn't that unusual.
"How about dog torture and dog murdering?" Behar asked.
For many people, dogs are sport, Goldberg replied, and it appeared it took awhile for Vick to realize that he was up against serious charges.

You know what wasn't that unusual in the south? hanging black people from trees and lighting crosses on fire on thier lawns.... I'm willing to bet that she would not support that sort of thing just because it was customary in the south.
The complete and total lack of logic here is astounding. I don't have any words.

I've been born and raised in the south, both my parents were born & raised in the south, all of my grandparents were born and raised in the south...

Never once have I been involved in nor heard of dogfights, nor have I heard my parents or grandparents speak of ever being involved in or hearing of dogfights.

I don't see how she was defending him.

It seems to me she was just pointing out why he and other don't see why it was so bad. She didn't indicate that she thought it wasn't bad.

She was defending him by being very apologetic and attempting to mitigate the situation. Bush grew up in the South. If he were dog fighting would she defend him? Ok he's the president, different standard, but I think you understand my point.

People see it as wrong because of their ethics. If it's an even more widespread problem as Woopie suggests it doesn't make it ok to do. It's still wrong.

I didn't see the the show, I can only go off of the quotes in the article.

I still don't see how this is defending him. Just pointing out that dog fighting is more widespread than people realize is not excusing it.

She was saying that it was no big deal. Its just what is done in some parts of the country. She was belittling the crime and making light of it.

That doesn't make it OK though. Drugs are fairly common in some areas/socioeconomic levels. Murders are common in west philly. They happen on a daily basis. It's just what they do in philly. No big deal.

How common is it? In NJ traffic is common, dog fighting is not. I can't think of one dog-fighting incident in NJ off the top of my head.

I'm not saying it makes it OK, and if she was trying to justify what he did she should probably have any pets taken away from her

I knew a guy who fought dogs back in my home town. He was a black dude who sold drugs, bred and fought dogs, and was involved in no less than 2 shootings in my hometown (in other words, he was a bit thuggish). He's the only person I've ever known to do it.

I don't know if it's a black thing or what, but I'd be willing to bet that this isn't localized to the south by any means. As a matter of fact, I remember him telling me that he often imported dogs for better breeding, and the people he was buying from was in the North and out West. These weren't just pitbull puppies, these were from a line of fight dogs and meant to be used as such.

It's not random at all to talk about a culture in the US of people who are into dog fighting when talking about the Vick case.

It's not limited to the south. It happens in Chicago all the time.

It's cultural, not geographical.
