| Dallas ISD - money better spent on security than education? Five years ago the Dallas Independent School District began arming its police officers with handguns. Select officers now have access to much more firepower five assault-style rifles purchased for a new SWAT-like response team.Someone tell me why DISD is wasting money on this instead of spending it on actually educating children, when the city of Dallas already has a more than capable SWAT unit that could respond better to the situations this unit is supposedly designed for? I call bullshit on the argument that a regular Dallas SWAT team could take two hours to arrive on the scene of a school shooting. If there is a report that shots have been fired inside a school, you know that the city's police force would have every unit it can there within minutes, because if they didn't they would be crucified by the community. $50,000 down the drain, imo. That money could've been better spent on actually educating children.

| The arguement that I could make would be that if the kids don't feel safe in thier own schools, if there are drug dealers and gangs operating in the school, learning becomes a secondary concern. If they can make the schools safe, kids will be more apt to learn and less apt to deal drugs, get into fights, etc. Especaily if you have these people on premisis and visable on a daily basis. Of course it could always backfire and end up making the kids feel like they are in a prison with armed guards.. in which case they will resent being there and not learn at all anyway. | ||||

What I take issue with is creating what amounts to a paramilitary police unit within that force.

| One would think handguns would be enough for a school environment. Who the fuck needs 'assault-style weapons' or whatever. Are they expecting some Red Dawn type shit? Talk about paranoid nutjobs. | ||||
