I actually took an english class based on african american history and literature and it was the best english class I ever had so you could be suprised if you have a good professor

a good professor makes any class good or bad tho

he seems like he has very good credentials... he was an ambassador to a couple of african nations during his government career

i hope it doesn't turn into a class of personal testimonies how the white man has kept blacks down.

every african american oriented class i've taken has turned into that. same for women's issues classes; girls sit around and complain how men at bars aren't interested in them, as people.

A Friend of mine took an African American Lit class at Cal State Long beach....she was the only white girl there. She had told me how she would have liked the class better, if she didn't feel like while reading slave narratives, they were looking at her and placing blame.

I can see the uncomfort in that, for sure.

However, there is alot to learn in that area, that is left out in mainstream classes, especially in literature.

I say go for it. It might turn out well.

of course if you found yourself 'uncomfortable' in such a situation one could do any or all of the following

examine ones inner exp[erience & try to more precisely characterise the discomfort & its source(s)

conduct thought exercises in empathy, ..., what possibly relevant situation might others have ever been in

relate the results of your self-examination to the rest of the class

I took a "Psychology of the Black Experience" class. It turned out to be a "Let's discuss how white people hold us back" class. It was horrible.

right... the prof said in the first 5 minutes that this won't be one of those... he said it also won't be a "feel good class" for the black people. we were talking a lot about bill cosby if you guys catch my drift

OK, so Iwas taking this Anthropology of religion class for summer school...

The topic was Rastafarians...if you don't know what that is, it's the religion that Bob Marley was....

ANYWAYS...

So we were talking about the specifics of being a rastafarian and the teacher asks the class, WhY DO RASTAFARIANS HAVE DREADLOCKS?

So he says that part of it has an "Animalistic Notion" to it...and this how the rest goes:

Teacher: What animal do you think resembles the look of dreadlocks?
ME: (saying it without raising my hand) Lions?
Teacher: YES! And why would a male rastafarian want to be compared to a Lion? What do Lions do?
ME: (I'm thinking about this show on Animal Planet about Lions and how the Male Lions do NOTHING, and the femals do all the work.) Lions lay around all lazy.
Teacher: Well, yes, they are lazy....but they could also be...CHILLIN?
ME: Well, I saw it on Animal Planet, that Lions just kick it, and the lionesses do all the work......(I say justifying my answer that I am talking more about the animal, than the race of the people!)

So I essentially said that black Jamaican men are lazy. And I realized after saying it how racist that sounded, and wondered why I was the only one semi-laughing at myself.

So Black Men = Male Lions Because they are both lazy.

Well....I thought it was funny.

I took a really good class my freshman year called "Race, Gender, and Ethnicity in America" (or something like that - this was 9 years ago). Our teacher was really objective about everything and it was very rewarding. Sounds like you might be in the same boat

i steered clear of any class that specified a specific race in the name, as you have to know it's going to be some bullshit racist class. they all are.
