Police officer beats up town councilman then arrests him for "resisting"

Roseland council member David Snyder was released from the St. Joseph County jail Saturday afternoon after being held overnight.

He was released after the prosecutor's office reviewed the police report and decided to drop the felony charge, clearing way for Dorothy Snyder to bail him out.

David Snyder was put in jail after David Snyder was ejected from a budget meeting Friday night, before being taken to the ground outside by a Roseland police officer.

The melee started because David Snyder protested after being given only one minute to speak by council member Charlie Shields. After a heated argument, laced with profanities, Shields kicked Snyder from the meeting.

Snyder slowly walked from the meeting, escorted by Officer Jack Tiller. When he got into the lobby, turned and said something to Tiller who appears to shove Snyder who falls hard into the glass door and outside.

NewsCenter 16's camera then shows David Snyder on the ground outside the town hall with Officer Tiller on top of Snyder. There are calls for Snyder to stop resisting as the officer pounds Snyder's head.

David Snyder was then taken to the hospital to be checked out before being taken to jail.

Recent reports have shown that the police are receiving just a little bit more than minimum wage every year, and the councilman that was attacked had recently requested that the town get rid of its police force entirely. Now this might seem like the town doesn't care about its police, but let's consider that Roseland has a police force of 5 cops and a population of 645 people living in 311 households. The police are making (I'm guessing) $20k/cop. Thus, each household is paying an average of $64.31/year each to have the cops kick the shit out of them.

I wonder what he said to him as he left the meeting, but there was nothing that he could have said that would have warranted being assaulted by the cop, pushed down, beaten, and arrested.

Just because you are a man with a badge doesn't mean you can arrest anyone for hurting your feelings.

The cop had zero reason to do that. Police abuse is becoming more and more common (and accepted: "Let the cops handle it!" as heard in the video) these days. The guy was leaving peacefully. I have no clue what he said, but it didn't warrant violence or an arrest on behalf of the cop.

Did he say "Oh, baldy is back" just as he walked out? I'm trying to figure out what caused that. He complied with everything though. He left when asked. He was polite (sort of) and got out. But he said something that pissed that officer off. That looks like big time police brutality to me.

Man, that guy that got beat seemed pretty much hated by everyone though, didn't he?

The fact that the officer beat the guy up indicates that the guy was right for wanting to get rid of town police. Obviously at least 40% of the town's law enforcement officers are not fit to be officers of the law.
