Will the war on Terror backfire?

There was a biton NPR this morning talking about how we had removed 2 of Iran's major opponents in the middle east. The Taliban and Iraq. Now with those two gone, Iran is much more powerful and influential in the region. They also arm and fund Hizbollah and are probably covertly trying to make nuclear weapons.

I don't know about you but that is a little bit scary to me.

I don't know if this will work.. but here is a link to the story. It's audio

NPR : Iran Holds Advantages in Nuclear Dispute

Even if we took out Iran's government, the people of Iran would simply elect another one just like them or worse. occupation is not an option.

Iran can be dealt with by airstrikes. I see no need to occupy or invade

I think we could knock out thier nuclear facilities with air strikes, however we run the risk of further angering the people and intensifying terror attacks. ALso, since Russia and China are somewhat involved in the issue and are against even sanctioning Iran... we run the risk of getting them involved.

Well when dealing with Iran any action by the US should include some big players. I do not think we should go at them like we did with Iraq.

But simply decapitating their government and letting it fall into chaos will not be helpful to the long-term goals of the U.S. in the region, which is what smokie's suggestion (just use airstrikes) would do.

I may be reading your post wrong. My suggestion is to just use airstrike to get the nuclear areas. Leave the government in place so that the Iranians can deal with that.

Sorry, I wasn't saying you said that, I was more building off of your post because I've heard people say before that we should just bomb their government into oblivion.

If that were true.....

Then wouldn't they do what the early Americans did? What about the bazillion other countries that overthrow their governments and replace them? This is a time honored tradition of being a citizen of a country, that when you hate your government, and enough people agree with you, you topple them and then put the leaders head on a spike and parade him through town square.

What doesn't seem to work, is when another country assumes what the people of another country wants, and then we go in with our assumptions of what they want, without considering the cultural differences that may be keeping their government in power.

The people of the Middle East care more about their religious laws being in majority, than they do, who is the talking head for the country. They listen to their religious leaders, not their politicians. This is where American needs to get a grip. And we can't go around the world executing religious leaders can we?

Let's Face it, some countries don't have individual freedom on their laundry list of things they want.

A majority of Americans are fed up with President Bush, do you think that means we'd welcome a foreign invasion of our country?

I don't know why there's this sense that people living in Iran or Iraq are living in mud huts or whatever that have no sense of national pride or whatever.

I may not like Bush, but there's no way I'd support a foreign regime coming in to depose him...

If the majority of people in Iran didn't want their current government, there'd be another revolution.

Here's some info on their politics:

surely when you say 'another' you must mean one like the first...one the US helped create.
