Not to be outdone by Hilary, Bush will push for Universal Health Care

Donklephant » Blog Archive » Could Bush Steal “Universal Health Coverage” Fire?

Clinton unveiled her plan as Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt said President Bush wants to achieve universal health care before he leaves office.

Leavitt told the USA TODAY editorial board that Bush will veto a Democratic plan emerging from Congress that would add $35 billion in taxpayer subsidies to the Children’s Health Insurance Program over five years. In doing so, Leavitt said, Bush will urge Congress to join him in seeking coverage for all Americans.

“He’d like to see the larger debate begin,” Leavitt said. “The very best opportunity we have may well be in the next 15 months.”
For one, I can't believe no one is talking about the Clinton annoucnement, but now Bush

I mean, FEMA, IRS, Social Security and you people want to hand your HEALTH to the government?

I don't even get the point of me going to work every day.

I can get housing, food, and now health care for free. Why should I do a damned thing for myself?

Please point me to a success in the federal government that you would want caring for your health.

So you're willing to risk destruction of the healthcare (and good healthcare at that) for 86% of americans so that 14% of americans can have some sort of healthcare? Makes no sense.

I don't see how you can be willing to risk your health.

Sorry, the system needs to be fixed by removing government, not introducing more.

More government in the most regulated industry in the country is going to destroy it.

I'm not a fan of universal healthcare, but I'm kind of pissed that he's vetoing the bill.

Children's health insurance programs are as far as I support a government run system.

Correct. The reason our health care system is sucking is because of government involvement. Rather than adding more, we should learn from our mistakes and correct the problem rather than compound it to socialistically absurd levels.

Are we questioning the efficiency of government vs. private corporations again? Really? Do we really really think that corporations are more efficient than government? What evidence do we have to support that? Sicko "documents" the inefficiencies in the corporate environment when it comes to health care. Hell, the bureacracy at my company has delayed putting two print servers in the rack in the data center for 6 weeks. Why do we trust the big bad inefficient machine of government to defend our country?

Personally I think choosing between insurance and government health care is about like choosing between a shit sandwich and shit soup. They both suck. They are both bloated, expensive, and inefficient. Insurance makes money by people paying premiums and then not covering people. The more they take in without covering people, the more they are considered a success (profitable) business. I am not sure a for profit insurance coupled with supply and demand is the best approach when it comes to health care. Demand is always going to be on the increase as the population grows and our unhealthy habits remain unchanged. Either way we all pay for it, whether it be in taxes or increased insurance premiums.

This smells of not being what it seems. He's vetoing children's heath coverage in a push for emmediate universal health coverage? Something tells me it's not quite the way the story tells.

Health care is inefficient for one single reason, the gov't.

Lasik eye surgery has minimal gov't intervention, no subsidies, doesn't accept insurance and the cost has constantly gone down to a point where everyone can afford it.

Gov't has made the health care industry more expensive and insurance has profited from it. More of either of them is not the solution. HMO's were the gov'ts solution to the medical issues of past and look where that got us.
