25 Most Corrupt Congressmen

CREW RELEASES THIRD ANNUAL MOST CORRUPT MEMBERS OF CONGRESS REPORT | Beyond Delay

CREW RELEASES THIRD ANNUAL MOST CORRUPT MEMBERS OF CONGRESS REPORT

September 18, 2007

Washington, DC – Today, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) released its third annual report on the most corrupt members of Congress entitled Beyond DeLay: The 22 Most Corrupt Members of Congress (and two to watch). This encyclopedic report on corruption in the 110th Congress documents the egregious, unethical and possibly illegal activities of the most tainted members of Congress. CREW has compiled the members’ transgressions and analyzed them in light of federal laws and congressional rules.

Sixteen members have been replaced from last year’s list of 25.

CREW also has re-launched the report’s tandem website, Home | Beyond Delay. The site offers short summaries of each member’s transgressions as well as the full-length profiles and all accompanying exhibits.

Members of the Senate:
Sen. Pete V. Domenici (R-NM)
Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY)
Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK)
Sen. Ted Stevens (R-AK)

Members of House:
Rep. Ken Calvert (R-CA)
Rep. John T. Doolittle (R-CA)
Rep. Tom Feeney (R-FL)
Rep. Doc Hastings (R-WA)
Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA)
Rep. William J. Jefferson (D-LA)
Rep. Jerry Lewis (R-CA)
Rep. Gary G. Miller (R-CA)
Rep. Alan B. Mollohan (D-WV)
Rep. Timothy F. Murphy (R-PA)
Rep. John P. Murtha (D-PA)
Rep. Steve Pearce (R-NM)
Rep. Rick Renzi (R-AZ)
Rep. Harold Rogers (R-KY)
Rep. David Scott (D-GA)
Rep. Don Young (R-AK)
Rep. Jerry Weller (R-IL)
Rep. Heather A. Wilson (R-NM)

Dishonorable Mention:
Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID)
Sen. David Vitter (R-LA)

“Every year CREW creates this compendium of corruption to expose and hold accountable those members of Congress who believe they are above the law,” Melanie Sloan, executive director of CREW said today. “With the third edition of Beyond DeLay it has become abundantly clear that many public officials believe that the rules don’t apply to them.”

Sloan continued, “Nevertheless, Congress persists in abdicating its constitutional responsibility to police itself, opting to ignore the ethical and legal transgressions of its members. Luckily for the public, at least the Department of Justice still believes that political corruption is worth pursuing.”

Several members in the study are already under federal investigation including: Reps. Calvert, Doolittle, Feeney, Jefferson, Lewis, Miller, Mollohan, Murphy, Renzi and Young, as well as Senator Stevens.

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) is a non-profit legal watchdog group dedicated to holding public officials accountable for their actions.

List by a NPO dedicated to disseminating information about corruption in congress. Fucking badass.

The link also has links to each individual congressman giving reasons why they are corrupt.

thats awesome on a couple levels. First 18 of the 22 are republican but most importantly it puts all these guys out infront of a potential firing squad. Now i just wish that these states would hold their representatives to account and fire them by voting for someone else.

The question of the day is why do you think the huge majority of them are republican (except 4 democrats)? Are republicans more corrupt? This survey is a repost found here
GOP corruption challenge

Any republicans want to answer why they think the majority on this list are corrupt?

I'm not republican, but I bet if you looked at congress on how long each person has been in "service" and compare it to this list, you'd see a major correlation there.

Didn't someone say "the only difference between an honest congressman and a dishonest congressman is time?" If no one has said that, I'm saying it!

Isn't CREW paid for by George Soros? Not exactly the most non-partisan group out there.

I want all bad politicians gone. If they are guilty of wrongdoing they need to get out. I also want term limits because I feel the longer someone is in office the more susceptible they are to corruption and special interest groups.

They should take donations to mail out fliers to people in the home districts of the congressmen to let the people know.

I'm fairly surprised no NJ congressman or senator made it on that list... It really makes me scratch my head as to what data they were working off of. I think the domain of "BeyondDelay" kind of tells you where they stand politically. I wasn't expecting to see Murtha on the list and was pleasantly surprised to find his name there. He usually gets a pass.

To name corrupt Democrats off the top of my head who should be on the last:
Maxine Waters
Harry Reid
Alcee Hastings
Steny Hoyer
Robert Menendez
etc

Well seriously when you look at this shit:
Rep. Heather A. Wilson (R-NM) | Beyond Delay

While yes corrupt, ok. But come on... compared to half the shit that goes on in Washington you're left to believe they were looking for another R to put at the bottom of the list.

That does seem weak. I'd like to see a full list of everyone though. They picked their 25, but if a list were generated that gave simple information on each congressman as a centralized place in which voters could go see what bad things their representatives are up to, that would be spectacular.

Hell, that almost seems like something the liberty lounge community could do. Make it limited wiki (to people who want to do the time researching people in congress) giving dates, pork spending, etc... focus on the bad stuff. If someone doesn't do anything that can be considered unehtical, they don't get put in there (or maybe just a place holder is made for them with standard info like how many terms they've been in congress and who they represent and a pic).

That's brilliant. Of course, there'd have to be some sort of guidelines as to what is considered unethical or not. I mean, some of those guys might have done something 50 years ago that could be considered unethical, but are now trying to fly straight and narrow.

Yup, that's true. Instead of "Alaska's first congressional district" it's just "Alaska At-large."

So, basically, Alaska is corrupt as shit.

Murkowski's is another one of those that's fairly frivolous in the grand scheme of things. There's just as much if not more corruption in NJ, CA, LA, etc
