J.D. Roy Atchison, the federal prosecutor accused of traveling from Gulf Breeze to Michigan with the intent of having sex with a 5-year-old girl, will remain jailed in Detroit.

Clad in a long-sleeve white T-shirt, thin-rimmed glasses and wearing ankle chains, Atchison waived his detention hearing today and stood mute as he heard three charges that could put him in prison for life.

A not guilty plea was entered on his behalf.

Atchison, 53, was arrested Sunday after getting off an airplane in Detroit.

Since Aug. 29, he’d been having almost daily online chats with an undercover officer posing as a mother interested in offering her fictitious 5-year-old daughter for sex, law officers said.

Atchison arrived at the airport Sunday with a Dora the Explorer doll, hoop earrings and petroleum jelly.

A MySpace.com page that a criminal complaint identified as belonging to Atchison says he enjoyed spoiling young girls.

Under the user name fldaddy04 and captioned “Experienced, understanding Daddy,” Atchison allegedly described himself in his profile as: “Handsome, educated, professional, experienced Daddy. I love younger girls. Like everything about you ... how you think, talk, act. I’m very understanding and supportive ... never ever judgmental.”

The Internet profile goes on to say that he would like to “pamper, spoil, change and take care of” girls.

His general interests are listed as “surfing, diving, boating ... everything to do with the water ... music and cute girls.”

Magistrate Virginia Morgan agreed with a request from Atchison’s attorney to take him off suicide watch.

“We think he is not a risk to himself and it certainly can be argued that he is not a risk to others,” said Detroit-based lawyer James Thomas.

When Morgan asked if he was comfortable being housed like any other prisoner, Atchison replied: “I am, your honor.”

Atchison was indicted on three charges:

-- Attempted enticement of a minor using the Internet, a charge carrying a potential 30-year sentence.

-- Aggravated sexual abuse, a charge also carrying a potential 30-year sentence.

-- Traveling across state lines to have sex with someone under 12, a charge that was added today and carries a maximum of life in prison upon conviction.

On Monday, an application to search Atchison’s home on Shoreline Drive in Gulf Breeze was filed before Magistrate Miles Davis in federal court in Pensacola.

The application is sealed and its contents are not available to the public.

Atchison has worked in the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Pensacola since the late 1980s, mostly handling asset forfeitures in criminal cases and civil cases in which the United States was a party.

He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Florida and his law degree from the Cumberland School of Law of Samford University in Birmingham, Ala.

He was admitted to the Florida Bar in 1986, according to the Bar’s Web site.
Atchison is also president of the Gulf Breeze Sports Association, a volunteer community group focused on youth sports.

Mike Mabry, vice president of the association, said Atchison has been placed on leave until the case is resolved.

“Honestly, we’re trying to put this behind us,” Mabry said. “Our goal is to be here for the kids. This is the last thing the kids need. We will move forward.”

Northern District U.S. Attorney Greg Miller released a statement Tuesday saying he and the other prosecutors in his office are “deeply saddened” by the allegations surrounding Atchison.

“Our office is fully cooperating with the (U.S.) Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Macomb County as they continue their work on this case,” Miller said.

A federal agent made contact with Atchison on Aug. 29 using online instant messaging software. During one conversation, Atchison referred to himself as “very much a family man.”

The conversations continued daily in which Atchison allegedly described several graphic sexual acts he wished to perform with the fictitious 5-year-old.

Days before traveling to Michigan, Atchison told the undercover officer to tell the little girl, “You found her a sweet boyfriend who will bring her presents.”

Atchison took a Continental flight to Houston on Sunday morning, changed planes and arrived in Detroit at 4:52 p.m. He was taken into custody without incident as he got off the plane.

Atchison’s wife, Barbara, a science teacher at Gulf Breeze High School, did not attend classes on Tuesday, according to principal Sylvan Lander.

“She just took some time off,” Lander said.

Attempts to speak with Atchison’s wife on Tuesday were unsuccessful.

According to court documents, Atchison initiated the online chat on August 29. His correspondence with the detective lasted several weeks.

At one point, Atchison allegedly said: "I'm always gentle and loving; not to worry; no damage ever; no rough stuff ever ever".

He has been charged with using interstate communication to entice a minor to have sexual contact, and travelling across state lines with the intent of engaging in illicit sexual contact. If convicted of both charges, he faces up to 40 years in prison, Associated Press reported.

"There wasn't much reaction from him at all," Macomb County Sheriff Mark Hackel said.

"He was cooperative with authorities".

how is he being charged with aggravated sexual abuse for chatting with what he thought was a mother about her child and taking a flight to the area? Same with the enticement of a minor charge.

I'm fine with the 3rd charge (which carries the strongest penalty) but the other two don't make sense, given that he didn't actually admit to sexually abusing a child nor was he caught in the act of doing so nor was he speaking to a minor.

I read a different story about this where he said he had done this with plenty of very young girls and none of them were her hurt by him.

He needs to fucking die.

The other two charges I have no issue with, but that one doesn't seem to fit because as best I can tell from the story posted, he didn't actually admit to sexually abusing a child nor was he caught in the act of doing so.

Crossing state lines with the intent of having sex with underage individuals is illegal. This is how they seem to get most of the predators out there.

i was 7 when someone abused me. and that shit fucked me up for a while. i think when you are exposed (literally) to sex at an earlier age, you're prone to start thinking about it and experimenting with it earlier.

but that's just molesting. full on intercourse would fuck you up for life. at that age it could prevent you from ever having children too.

I can't even imagine that type of sick fuck.
