'Dead' Man Wakes Up Under Autopsy Knife

CARACAS

A Venezuelan man who had been declared dead woke up in the morgue in excruciating pain after medical examiners began their autopsy.

Carlos Camejo, 33, was declared dead after a highway accident and taken to the morgue, where examiners began an autopsy only to realize something was amiss when he started bleeding. They quickly sought to stitch up the incision on his face.

"I woke up because the pain was unbearable," Camejo said, according to a report on Friday in leading local newspaper El Universal.

His grieving wife turned up at the morgue to identify her husband's body only to find him moved into a corridor -- and alive.

Reuters could not immediately reach hospital officials to confirm the events. But Camejo showed the newspaper his facial scar and a document ordering the autopsy.

Wow. I'm reminded of that scene from Heroes where she wakes up on the autopsy table.. ugh.

How can you be a trained health official and not realize someone is still alive? I mean, is it possible (without the use of drugs or whatever) for the heart rate to be that low, and breathing that shallow..?

Remind me to never seek medical attention in Venezuela's...

Side note... imagine how creepy it must be to have a "dead" patient wake up on you in the morgue.

It's happened in the United States as well. I remember there being a special on just that a few years ago. I think every single incident that I saw involved a drug overdose of some sort, i.e., guy takes so much heroine that his heart slows down to almost nothing. That would be an interesting statistic, though. How many people have woken up in a morgue?

well ever hear about the whole reason there was a "graveyard shift"? because it was commonplace enough that people were buried alive that they put a string in their hand and had it go up above ground to a little bell, so in case they weren't actually dead, they could ring the bell and the person on graveyard shift would hear it and get someone to dig them up asap.

funky little things you learn when you used to give the ghost tours in Newport RI.

that is awsome i didn't know that. i guess you learn something new everday. and about waking up on a mourge table. i think that would be alittle disconsorting for the person waking to in that he isn't dead and everyone thought that he was.
