Bush says In Address "Mandela is dead" and a "brutal tyrant"

Think Progress » Bush inartfully suggests Saddam killed Mandela.

Bush inartfully suggests Saddam killed Mandela.

In a press conference this morning, President Bush tried to assert that Saddam’s brutal rule over Iraq wiped the country clean of potential democratic reformers — individuals who may have possessed leadership skills like former South African President Nelson Mandela. In doing so, Bush inartfully suggested Saddam killed Mandela:
I thought an interesting comment was made — somebody said to me, I heard somebody say, “Now, where’s Mandela?” Well, Mandela’s dead because Saddam Hussein killed all the Mandelas.
For the record, Nelson Mandela is still alive while Saddam Hussein is dead.

Nelson Mandela was a strong opponent of the war in Iraq. Prior to the war, he condemned Bush as “a president who can’t think properly and wants to plunge the world into holocaust.” “Why does the United States behave so arrogantly?” he asked, adding, “They just want the oil. We must expose this as much as possible.”

Wow, this thread is really reaching.

Bush does plenty of horrible things that don't need to be "spun" to make him look bad, why bother with something like this?

Because it shows, yet again, what an idiot he is.

I agree

If one wants to show Bush up using these remarks then I'd go for, ...,

"Part of the reason why there is not this instant democracy in Iraq is because people are still recovering from Saddam Hussein's brutal rule." - Well in that case why, originally, did your admin both plan & portray the effort as one where 'instant democracy' was possible?

"because Saddam Hussein killed all the Mandelas. " - So why then, did your admin herald Chelabi as a figure who would be popular in Iraq?

But I wouldnt really bother doing so coz I feel more relieved that Bush is making more sense, in general, on Iraq than before.
OTOH phrasing his point in the way that he did has allowed the 'reach' & thus is a bit inept, possibly

Because I was in London when the statue to Mandela was unveiled. And Bush's comments hit a nerve.

It was one of those "you had to be there" moments it seems.
