One-third of British men will be obese by 2010

LONDON -- Nearly a third of all British men will be obese by 2010, according to a government report released Friday.

By that time, 12 million adults and one million children are forecast to be too fat, according to the Health Department's report. Britain's estimated population is 60 million.

The report says that just under a quarter of British adults are already obese and that nearly two-thirds of British men and 56 per cent of British women are considered overweight.

Most dramatic is the projected rise in childhood obesity among girls, who are expected to outnumber their male counterparts by 2010, with obesity reaching nearly one in five girls between the ages of 2 and 10.

Obesity is a high-profile issue in Britain, as it is elsewhere in Europe and in North America, where the proportion of overweight men and women has been rising steadily.

Last month Prime Minster Tony Blair warned the food industry that the government could ban the promotion of junk food to children unless the industry agreed to voluntary regulations.

Government statistics show that obesity causes at least 9,000 premature deaths, and Britain's National Health Service spends the equivalent of $2 billion Cdn annually on obesity related illnesses.

Separately, Latvia will become the first EU country to implement a total ban on junk food sales in public schools on Nov. 1 after a government decision earlier this week, experts said.

Banned products include soft drinks such as Coca-Cola, potato chips, candy and foodstuffs containing artificial colourings or flavourings.

Now Americans can't talk. Thirty percent of Americans are obese which is far more than the current UK rates. But the British are catching up.. FAST. Probably due to all the beer they drink...

It's interesting how the US was constantly thought to the country that had all these problems. The rest of the world seems to just take a bit longer to catch on. We were the innovators of obesity. Let it be known.

every western (and westernized, like Japan) nation is or will be fighting obesity because our lifestyles are all basically the same.

I don't know. When I was in Germany during world cup there were news stories saying that where ever England played they would run out of beer in those cities because of the fans. Run out of beer! In friggen Germany!!!!! I think they drink a LOT.
