| McGovern likely to endorse Clinton AP - George McGovern, the 1972 Democratic presidential nominee, said Friday he was leaning toward endorsing Hillary Rodham Clinton for president but wanted to wait a bit before making a final decision. In a telephone interview, McGovern, 85, praised Clinton as a "terrific candidate" but said he was also impressed with Barack Obama and John Edwards. "I think those three have the best chance of winning," said the former South Dakota senator. McGovern said he had met with Obama and hoped to meet with Edwards before announcing an endorsement. "I've really still got an open mind. I want to continue to watch developments and talk to the candidates," he said. A World War II veteran, McGovern's outspoken opposition to the Vietnam War helped fuel his 1972 presidential bid. He was soundly defeated in the general election by President Nixon, a Republican. McGovern won just Massachusetts and the District of Columbia. McGovern's relationship with Clinton goes back 35 years, when she and then-boyfriend Bill Clinton helped run McGovern's presidential campaign organization in Texas. Nixon won the state by a margin of 66 percent to 33 percent. source: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070928/ap_on_el_pr/clinton_mcgovern [link] | ||||
