So you're saying liberal academics use PC words because they sound better, and not because they don't want to be PC. While GOP rednecks us PC words because they have a burning desire to not offend someone.

Black American? That's dumb too

Who said they feel its the correct term? I knew/know history professors who hated the titles of their courses

They HAVE to use the titles assigned, often courses and even whole departments are changed around at a moments notice and you have a group of grumpy people in a hot room on a friday at 5pm going through a checklist and making a 2 minute decision on a title by people who have no familiarity with the subject whatsoever

Their newsletter even has a graphic of Africa with the United States superimposed into it They also say "African American" 28 times in the Newsletter. I can tell they absolutley hate using that term!

Listen, I am pretty sure you never were involved in the Liberal Arts administration at whatever university you graduated from...but trust me, stupid things like course titles and newsletters do not reflect the majority opinion, let alone the entire spectrum of thought by the faculty

I had some whacky-left socialist professors in Philadelphia, and they all thought using African-American was stupid (many of them were black) and the writings I was refered to across the nation certainly came to that conclusion

I am sorry I don't have the handouts from years ago that I can scan and show you

What do I think specifically about that newspaper? You had one professor at one meeting who was bitching and moaning and everyone just said "fine whatever" because its not THAT BAD of a term, its a just not accurate, but niether is black, because they aren't black, they are dark brown

Perhaps A-A wasn't the best choice, scholars certainly come to agree that someone is Hispanic, not a "Latino-American" and they've universally rejected Native Americans because NA's hate the title, you call them by their tribe, and refer to them as "North American tribes" in many senses, and sometimes, as a shorthand ive seen the most sensitive, ultra-liberal professors say they were "Indians" just because its quick shorthand

i hate agreeing with you..

major services to the wtc area (hello new path station) have been up and running for the past three (close enough) years. People can live in the area, plans on rebuilding are going on and have been going on for quite some time.

Most of the holdups have seemed to be deciding what kind of buildings to put there after the initial plans that came back were met with horror from the general public..

it's not a question of getting the area cleaned and ready for rebuilding, it's a question of politics and emotion meeting around the wtc site.

N.O. seems more a question of still actually getting the basic area cleaned up, they haven't even begun to move on to the bigger questions of what will become of the area in the future..

and yes.. for him to refer to the wtc site as some hole in the ground in nyc is enraging in and of itself..

This is stupid trying to pin political correctness on liberals or conservatives. They both do it, just about different subjects. At its heart, political correctness is simply when you're not allowed to say true things because they're taboo, so instead they're not talked about or euphemisms come up instead.

Sure, liberals have come up with some stupid PC terms, but so have conservatives. If I say Dubya is "zealously religious," that's very un-PC in conservatives circles, so instead I must use the euphemism "man of great faith."

If anyone says anything bad about a soldier in Iraq, regardless of how true it is, that's also very un-PC in conservative circles, so instead I must use "our brave soldiers fighting for our freedom."

Conservatives also MUST refer to any and all people involved in surgencies as "terrorists," or they'll be accused of being sympathizers. Try to label a terrorist something neutral like a "combatant" according to basic journalistic objectivity and PC conservatives will whine just as loudly as a bleeding heart liberal upon hearing "black" instead of African American.

It's bullshit on both sides.

I'm just sick of the way people talk about the attacks. It strikes me as self-serving and exploitative.

I don't think that you can compare cleaning up the WTC and NO. In the context that he said that, he was defending his city being in shambles still a year later. And I think as the mayor of tha
