This paper is getting sued all over the place, the only reason they are still around is because the libel laws are friendlier to the paper here in the States

Yeah there is a special exception for the press when they are talking about "a public figure". The story has to be false, the paper has to know that it's false,and they have to publish it anyway with malice.
All they have to do in this case is to cite some source and claim that they believed it was true.

Maybe it's my bias against the kind of holier-than-thou asshole Edwards is, but he strikes me as exactly the kind of guy who would have an affair while preaching to the rest of us.

At first pass, I'm leaning toward believing the affair happened.

Why would they get sued? Lies are in the newspapers every day. Really outlandish lies are in the tabloids. No malice = no problem.

It is your bias, you must know that the credibility of that publication is suspect at best, for god sakes it's on the grocery checkout counter next to soap magazines.

Just because you may not like a person or really believe he is a certain way doesn't make him so. I don't like Ann Coulter but you don't see me posting stuff about her adams apple and rumors she is a tranny - as much as I would find that hilarious.

I doubt he's stupid enough to engage in an affair while campaigning for presidency... he has a press group following him around. And while they're likely liberal and think he's greater than a non-existent God, I really don't think they'd pass up such a story. It would be great for their careers.
