All I want is a yard for my kids. That's all.
Move to the SE, there's lots of land out here.

South East?

Well, moving isn't as easy as just picking up and leaving. I have family in California, I want my children to know my family. And what about work? I would hate to loose our apartment, which is considered a good deal by OC standards, to move somewhere, and not be able to work. I am tied here until I finish school anyways...but, getting up and moving when you have kids, and your whole life somewhere, it's hard.

Honestly, I'm banking on my Mother In Law croaking since we get her house.

lol, at least you have a plan

And if you want a front yard, what do you care about how good of a deal your apartment is? It's not what you want. My place is a great deal, but it's not what my fiance wants, so I gotta move.

And moving isn't too bad, the trick is getting a job BEFORE you make the move. Don't just go somewhere and start looking.

No matter hard you sit there with your Libertarian Bible and say your prayers to capitalism, you are not going to convince someone who cares about their family to abandon their companionship for their "economic interest"

We are hard-wired by genetic evolution to stick with our family, for many people asking them to abandon their family is akin to asking them to stop breathing

Well, yeah. I know several Mothers who have moved from places to California, leaving their families behind. And it's actually very very very hard on them. Because when you're kid is sick, and you need help, most of us go to our family first. And when you're a parent, or even married, many times you need that kinda of support system.

My mom moved over 6 months ago, and it affects me. I can't leave Owen there over night and take a break. She can't pick him up and spend time with him. If I am in a bind, and need someone to watch him, I can't go to her now, when I could when she lived here. Having family close to you is important. It might not seem like it for some of you right now, but it is.

I understand that how it has come to be is the market...it's capatalism...and if I don't like it enough, sure there are things I can do.

But the Market and Capatalism has a price. And to some the price isn't worth it.

The desire to remain around family isn't anti-capitalism... it's simply a factor that dictates demand. I live a few hours from my family and am cool with that. As much as I love my family, I feel I could live decently far from them and still be cool (though I've never lived away from the East Coast). But I know that not everyone can do that. I was merely pointing out that you have to weigh what you want with what you have available to you. If family is more important than anything else, then do whatever you can to live around them. Otherwise, you weigh the other things you want. If a yard for your kids is very important, then you can't live in certain places.

This should be nothing surprising... everyone has to make choices.

Some would say its pretty cruel to tell a middle class, intelligent women that she can must either abandon her family, or the hope of having a small yard for child

Everyone has to make choices. It isn't cruel to tell someone the truth: that they have to make a decision between two things they want because given the current circumstances they can't have both.

because that's a common decision that has to be made in the U.S. among intelligent, middle-class people. Hell, that isn't even a common problem among idiots in the lower income levels!

The loss to philosophy!!!!

On a more serious note, just because the events don't happen to you doesn't mean they don't matter

I can't believe people could actually live by a morality of "well, its not that common so...it doesn't matter!"

You'll care when it's you having to make that decision.

And just so we know...I'm not talking about a couple hours. I'm talking about days of driving away from family.

When it's your decision to make, you'll care. And I don't doubt that it is a decision.

But a country can only be a strong as it's middle class.
