Don't get me wrong. It's great they have enough money to hand out checks to a few thousand people. But people here who want to compare this to Katrina, where just in greater N.O.'s alone there are 1.3 million people, just doesn't make sense.
It's not checks, its cash. They've been handed it already and they started handing it out the day the campaign stopped.

And, there's quite a lot of people who were displaced / had their homes ruined.. when you consider the scope of Hezbollah as an organization compared to that of our government, it's suprising that they've been as effective as they have been.

Again, they had lists of people, that were updated, with names, addresses, etc.. whos place were damaged or destroyed, and that's how they knew who to hand the stuff out to.

When you compare it to the clusterfuck of bureaucracy that the rebuilding of Katrina has been... it's a pretty stark contrast.

I'm sure he thought that it was possible they'd stage a small raid to get back the soldiers, or perhaps targeted strikes against hezbollah centers, but who thought they'd level the entire infrastructure of Lebanon??? Everyone including Hezbollah was suprised when they started bombing bridges and the airport.

yeah they really did set them back 20 years. It's sad because Beirut was just getting back on it's feet and becoming a "real" city. now it's back to rubble again.

27% of Lebanon's GDP was from tourism last year, primarily Beirut the "Paris of the Middle East" - figure from FP mag on my desk

with that definitely declining now until they rebuild, their economy will be in shambles, and that's when people get both angry and desperate... then turn to terror... nasty chain of events it is

Rebuilding buildings doesn't bring people back if they believe they're going to be in danger of dying from the Israeli's firing indiscriminately at civilian targets with cluster bombs.

Yup. It wasn't Hezbollah the organization that suffered (or will suffer) as a result of this, it was the ordinary Lebanese people.

Yes. They often carry out operations in Gaza, the West Bank, and other places completely unprovoked.. and then feign ignorance or claim defensive measures when in retaliation, someone blows themself up in Israeli territory and they once again go in and fuck up the lives of ordinary citizens.

When civilians aren't able to leave because the Israeli military has destroyed roads, bridges, gasoline reserves, the airport, convoys leaving the area filled with civilians, busses leaving the area filled with civilians, and then says "Welp, shoulda gotten out!" like there was actually some way for them to do it, it most certainly is.

Israel's use of cluster bombs makes them guilty of war crimes, the same as Hezbollah. Cluster bombs aren't designed to take out a specific asset, they're designed to cause as much destruction as possible in a specific area.

Even Pat Buchanan said Israel went way to far when they bombed civilian infrastructure such as the airport
