Hezbollah says its war with Israel was a mistake

TEL AVIV -- Hezbollah leader Sheik Hassan Nasrallah said yesterday that he would not have ordered the July 12 seizure of two Israeli soldiers had he known it would provoke a war that leveled Shi'ite villages and neighborhoods throughout Lebanon.
"We did not think, even 1 percent, that the capture would lead to a war at this time and of this magnitude. You ask me, if I had known on July 11 ... that the operation would lead to such a war, would I do it? I say no, absolutely not," he told Lebanon's New TV station.

so i wonder what exactly he thought would happen after he kidnapped 3 israeli soldiers? was he thinking the israeli government would see it as a practical joke? if not as an act of war, what were his intentions? this whole apology doesn't make sense to me.

It was for the benifit of the people in lebanon who got bombed.

isn't it obvious that he did not intend to incite war? don't his statements pretty much make that clear?

it was a dumb move on both parties. hizbollah shouldn't have taken those (i heard 2) soldiers, and israel completely over-reacted, as they didn't even get the soldiers back. one has to question whether that was even intended.

They've captured Israelis before, they've launched missiles into Israel before...none of it turned into a full scale war

It's more like an apology to the 900 lebanese who died, saying he didn't want it to turn out that way...

You know like when Reagan didn't think 200+ Marines would die in Lebanon

It's very politically astute on his part, because now he is:
Calming any (very small) segment of the population who thinks he was reckless
Re-establishing himself as a force for low violence and stability, in addition to his amazing rebuilding efforts

I'm sorry I don't have the CBS video, but they really made it out to be one of the most incredible efforts made on rebuilding a wartorn country immediately after a war, Hezbollah has been extremely organized and their system has been flawless as far as any international reporter can tell

And it seems even better when compared to the effort from the lebanese government... which has been essentially no effort. They have done nothing. Hizbollah is actually giving people cash for rent and rebuilding and stuff. Not really a good situation as it will sure up support for them in the region and they know it. It's not like they are doing it out of the goodness of thier hearts. They are doing it so that they can continue thier activities in the region.

Why would you assume that Hezbollah doesn't care about its own people and extended family members?

Nasrallah underestimated Israelis response so ALL OF HEZBOLLAH are now uncaring and heartless people with no love for their families?
