It was because they wanted to pull his pork project(bridge to nowhere) and divert funds to pay for Katrina.

Byrd Confirms "Secret Hold" on Porkbusting Bill -- And Drops It
By Paul Kiel - August 31, 2006, 3:59 PM

In a newly-released statement, Sen. Robert Byrd's (D-WV) spokesman Tom Gavin confirms his boss Byrd had a hold on the bill -- but has hereby released it.

The entire statement follows:

There was an effort to pass a bill (S. 2590) on an important subject without debate just before the Senate recess. Senators have an obligation to their constituents to know what they are voting on before signing off on any proposal. The American people ought to demand that bills receive scrutiny by Senators before those bills are approved. We have seen the consequences of rushing legislation through the Senate without any time for review or understanding.

On August 2, the last day before a month-long Senate recess, a Senate committee gave its approval to a brand new piece of legislation, cosponsored by Senator Obama and Senator Coburn. That same day, there was an effort to rush the legislation through the Senate without any Senator having the chance to ask questions.

So they're okay with signing the USA PATRIOT act with little to no time to read it, yet they won't sign a gov't transparency bill with only a day to read it through? Another weak response of an undefensible hold.

Welp, there goes my some of my respect for him as a statesman and standing up for things. I wonder what thomez has to say about this?

At least he released his hold. Any news on Stevens?

no, Byrd has fought every single time anyone has tried to rush through legislation without debate, discussion, and a time to evaluate the bill

in this respect I'm not at all suprised Byrd would do this - as passing bills without debate is a totally ridiculous idea that he has spoke out against time after time

also motivez, the correct spelling in that context is "sum" not "some" ... unless you added a "my" on accident

and there is no reason for TKG to attempt to bring up his distant past in this discussion, no relevance

I've always been a Byrd fan because he's the greatest member of the House or Senate to grace those halls during my entire life. A Constitutional scholar, a history scholar, a historian of republican government, and an abssolute joy to watch speak on the floor of the Senate. I certainly do not agree with all of his views, but I do realize that I'm witnessing a legend when I see one.

The Democrats will be at a true loss when he is no longer a Senator

I wish he was passing on his wisdom to someone else, like you say he a like an encylopedia of the Roman and US Senate

He can be sharp too, I remember him saying on the "nuclear option" of judicial appointments, removing Filibusters:
If Frist tries to limit that right, "He's going to see a real filibuster," Byrd warned.

He's very sharp and his book "Losing America" is probably still the best book I have came across on (the sad state of) recent politics.
