| Acomplished meteorologists: Gore film "Brainwashing our Children" Gore gets a cold shoulder Steve Lytte October 14, 2007 ONE of the world's foremost meteorologists has called the theory that helped Al Gore share the Nobel Peace Prize "ridiculous" and the product of "people who don't understand how the atmosphere works". Dr William Gray, a pioneer in the science of seasonal hurricane forecasts, told a packed lecture hall at the University of North Carolina that humans were not responsible for the warming of the earth. His comments came on the same day that the Nobel committee honoured Mr Gore for his work in support of the link between humans and global warming. "We're brainwashing our children," said Dr Gray, 78, a long-time professor at Colorado State University. "They're going to the Gore movie [An Inconvenient Truth] and being fed all this. It's ridiculous." At his first appearance since the award was announced in Oslo, Mr Gore said: "We have to quickly find a way to change the world's consciousness about exactly what we're facing." Mr Gore shared the Nobel prize with the United Nations climate panel for their work in helping to galvanise international action against global warming. But Dr Gray, whose annual forecasts of the number of tropical storms and hurricanes are widely publicised, said a natural cycle of ocean water temperatures - related to the amount of salt in ocean water - was responsible for the global warming that he acknowledges has taken place. However, he said, that same cycle meant a period of cooling would begin soon and last for several years. "We'll look back on all of this in 10 or 15 years and realise how foolish it was," Dr Gray said. During his speech to a crowd of about 300 that included meteorology students and a host of professional meteorologists, Dr Gray also said those who had linked global warming to the increased number of hurricanes in recent years were in error. He cited statistics showing there were 101 hurricanes from 1900 to 1949, in a period of cooler global temperatures, compared to 83 from 1957 to 2006 when the earth warmed. "The human impact on the atmosphere is simply too small to have a major effect on global temperatures," Dr Gray said. He said his beliefs had made him an outsider in popular science. "It bothers me that my fellow scientists are not speaking out against something they know is wrong," he said. "But they also know that they'd never get any grants if they spoke out. I don't care about grants." Gore gets a cold shoulder - Environment - smh.com.au __________________________________________________ _____________ I can't say I am anywhere near confident as Dr. Gray in the cause or short term problem of Global warming. But I am not the scientist either. What really bothers me is that last quote. Is the scientific community at the point where they are ready to ignor alternative opinions and data? How much "global Warming" money and the results those interests "want to see" driving the data and shuting out dissent? When the loudest voice is shouting the "debate is over" and the voice we shown out school children is full of questionable assertions I do protest.

| Wow, I'm surprised that a University would let this guy speak. He is one of the best mets in the world and has a long career in atmospheric and meteorological research. He also taught at one of the best Met programs on the planet at CSU. As far as the last part goes he's exactly right there's been hordes of scientists basically lose grant money for speaking out against the science. | ||||

In the other thread I posted the article in he attacked on the basis of his credibility.

| Just to put that quote into perspective the person who wrote that on his blog is an alarmist who pays to attend Al Gore's training sessions. Just about article I've read about him says he's the most famous hurricane expert in the world and his opinion is highly respected. In Al Gore's film he lies/exaggerates about hurricanes, Davis is one of the most qualified people in the world to claim Al Gore is brainwashing people. | The point Jeff made is that Gray has lost favor with the scientific community not because of his science, but because he is making strong statements without backing them up with evidence. This view has been confirmed by Texas A&M's Andrew Dessler, a climate scientist who recently spoke to Gray at a scientific meeting: I might also add that Gray made two appearances at this year's hurricane conference at the National Hurricane Conference that were handled, and probably sponsored, by Tech Central Station. This is an important detail because the Web site's funding has been linked to Exxon, among others, in this article and by other sources. | ||||

| Who is Jeff? And yes Andrew Dessler is the alarmist who attends Al Gore's training sessions. He is far less known and respected in the scientific community. | ||||

| A person does not have to be a genius, only willing to go with what is puked out at the Whitehouse. I'm certainly not a Democrat or Republican, but Al Gore did not come up with his message based solely on his on imagination. He has the support of scientists around the world. We've known about how humans have interracted with the ozone layer since the 1970s. Our pollution is taking its toll on our environment including the ozone. For several years, I have not heard much discussion from anyone, scientists or otherwise, on how much losing the Amazon rain forests have impacted the ozone. The rain forests are essential for air for the planet and repairing the ozone. Hear alot about the plight of the indigenous peoples, but not much about environmental impacts over the last several years. Al Gore brought much needed attention to global warming. If American television is going to pour religious broadcasting into my home by giving air time to a bunch of religious fanatics every Sunday or whenever they have a funeral to protest, then Al Gore can preach on about global warming. Somebody say 'amen!' | ||||
