Terror Bomb Blast Kills 108 in Pakistan!

KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) - Two bombs exploded Thursday night near a truck carrying former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto on her triumphant return to Pakistan after eight years in exile, killing at least 108 people and wounding 150, an official said. Party workers and police said Bhutto was unhurt.

Associated Press photographer B.K. Bangash at the scene said he saw between 50 and 60 dead or badly injured people. He said some of the bodies were ripped apart.

An initial small explosion was followed by a huge blast just feet from the front of the truck carrying Bhutto during a procession through Karachi. The blast shattered windows in her vehicle and set a police escort vehicle on fire.

Those traveling atop the truck with Bhutto climbed down, with one man jumping off while
others climbed down.

Bhutto, who is expected to seek the premiership for an unprecedented third time and partner in ruling Pakistan with U.S.-backed President Gen. Pervez Musharraf, was safe, said her lawyer, Sen. Babar Awan.

Police Chief Azhar Farooqi told Dawn News that Bhutto was rushed from the area under contingency plans.

"She was evacuated very safely and is now in Bilawal House," Farooqi said, referring to Bhutto's residence in Karachi.

Officials at four hospitals in Karachi reported a total of 51 dead and 150 wounded.

Dr. Seemi Jamali of Jinnah Hospital said it had 19 dead from the blast, and of the 70 wounded, between 20 and 25 were in critical condition.

A man who identified himself only as Dr. Faisal of Liaqat National Hospital, reported 30 killed and 80 wounded, many critically.
Provincial Home Secretary Ghulam Mohammed Mohtaram said the main force of the blast appeared to be taken by the police vehicle.

Footage from the scene of the blasts showed bodies on the ground, lying motionless, under a mural that read "Long Live Bhutto."

Pools of blood, broken glass, tires, motorcycles and bits of clothing littered the ground near where the bombs went off. Men moved the injured away from the fires near the blast site. One bystander came upon a body, checked for signs of life, and moved on, presumably to find more who could be saved.

The injured were carried in stretchers from ambulances and rushed them into a hospital emergency room, while others carried the wounded in their arms. Many of the wounded were covered in blood, and some had their clothes ripped off.

I hope this will rally more people around Musharraf and this attempt to reconcile and possibly share power with former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

Yeah things seem to be deteriorating fast in Pakistan. I don't see Musharraf holding onto power much longer.

It's great that we're so concerned about Iran and their invisible nukes when Pakistan has an arsenal in the middle of this mess.

I doubt he's saying that since the current leader is about as close an ally as anyone, but that if things continue int he current direction, that leader may be gone and a hostile force may be in charge of the country and their nukes.

It's a more immediate threat than Iran which currently has no nukes.

Ok. And you think you are the only one enlightened enough to think about that?

I think we should tell them to either give us Osama or we will go in and get him ourselves.

That would do more to protect this country than anything done in Iraq.

Given what our leadership has accomplished:

1) Going into Iraq with faulty intelligence, knowing full well they are not a threat

2) Osama is still around

3) AQ is still strong

4) Other extreme Islamic groups have gained strength

5) We talked a good game at N Korea but ended up appeasing them

6) Civil war in Iraq

7) Afghan. is now the opium capital of the world

8) Iran has gotten stronger

9) We pissed of our strategic ally Turkey for an exceedingly dumb reasons

10) The Shia have risen to power

11) The Palestine - Israel conflict has gotten worse

12) Syria has gotten stronger

Given all of this, which happened only in the last few years, I would not assume ANY of our leaders would automatically know the consequences of this

Speaking of Syria. We never had a thread about this. But that air attack by Israel a few weeks ago seems to have been an attack on the start of a Syrian Nuclear facility. Pretty wild.

I am saying if we're "worried" about a country like Iran having the partial pieces and the ability to not make nukes for decades, why aren't we worried about the country in turmoil that has an arsenal of nukes and Bin Laden running around in the countryside?

I'm sure we are worried. You also know that I think Osama is dead and has been for a long time

Unless they aren't aware. Do you know how many cave-ins have happened as a result of our airstrikes? There is no way to check every inch of space for bodies. And if he wasn't killed by our attacks, he may have died of illness. He was/is a sickly person, and there is nothing for Al Qaeda to gain by advertising that he has died.

I dont want to say either way, but he may well be dead and we dont know it.
