Most of the laws protecting workers were pushed by the unions. I don't like government unions either but unions are important in our system. If unions get better wages the people in the same field usually get near or just as good. Unions do the work and everyone else benefits, but they don't want to join and pay up. My own opinion is that Marx would have been right about capitalism and it would have destroyed itself if it had not been for unions. It is harder to see their importance now and their leadership seems to be in sorry shape.
