Hillary Disses Iowa

Newsday.com broke the story today that supposed Democratic runaway frontrunner Hillary Clinton has had some not so flattering things to say about the states of Iowa and Mississippi recently. If you believe some of the latest polls that show Clinton creeping ahead in the Hawkeye state, Iowans may want to know that Hillary Clinton does a good job of paying lip service to their concerns in public, but holds quite different views of the voters of Iowa in private. In an interview with The Des Moines Register, Clinton singled out Iowa and Mississippi as two states that have never elected top officials who are women. She called Iowa a "special burden" for her campaign and said it was her "hardest" state. Despite the obvious slam to Iowa, Hillary was even less flattering when describing Mississippi. When you call something in your life a burden, that means that you want to be free from it, or get rid of it. Despite the apparently fake smile and cackle that Hillary has unwittingly been brandishing with her audiences, she cannot wait to be rid of Iowa. So, Hillary, say what you want about Iowans, but just remember, when it comes to politics they are quite a savy bunch. If you want to continue to try play the Iowa voters for a fool, just remember that you might wake up on the morning after the Iowa caucus with a 3rd or 4th place finish. Then, your wish will be granted, except this time, it will be the people of Iowa who have gotten rid of you. Then, who will be the fool? Click on the following link to read the article:

Unfortunately the typical things that would be considered "right and wrong" generally do not apply in politics. A story like this will probably be swept under the rug and some how dismissed by her campaign. They can say something like she was "taken out of context". By the time they are done spinning it, her statement will sound like she loves iowa, the people, and everything about it so much that she would make next monday national Iowa day when president. I am beginning to surrender to the idea that she is simply too powerful.

The number 1 issue in Iowa has consistently been immigration issues.

Here Tim Russert asks Clinton why she thinks giving NY illegal immigrants a drivers license "makes sense." She has been a strong supporter of this bill. Her response initially was to blame it on George Bush. Dodd then challenges her on it and there was a very embarrassing series of backtracking that ensued.

This will probably be the 2 minutes of the debate that gets the most blog/media coverage. It's all over Huffington Post and every other major liberal/conservative blog.

Not long after Obama invoked the "for it or against it" phrase into the 2008 campaign.
Both Mr. Edwards and Mr. Obama called her on what seemed to be a shift in her statement. Mr Edwards said, "Unless I missed something, Senator Clinton said two different things in the course of about two minutes just a few minutes ago." And Mr. Obama uttered a devastating phrase for anyone who remembers the 2004 campaign: he said he couldn't tell if she is "for it or against it."

On the license issue, Mr. Obama said that he thinks Governor Spitzer's plan is "the right idea."
Now Obama is for the driver's licenses so that will hurt him in Iowa, but he wasn't the one directly asked and he wasn't the one who will be getting all the media attention surrounding this question. I don't think there's much doubt that if this snafu gets a lot of media play it will hurt Hillary a lot in Iowa where her lead over Obama is marginal at best. If Obama takes the lead on Hillary in Iowa it could turn the Democratic campaign on its head.

Here is the Clinton quote btw:
"I know exactly what Gov. Spitzer's trying to do and it makes a lot of sense, because he's trying to get people out of the shadows," Clinton told the editorial board of the Nashua Telegraph. "He's trying to say, 'Okay, come forward and we will give you this license.'"

I just don't get it, why is Hillary so ahead in the polls? She doesn't seem all that great to me

She has a popular last name. America wants a Democrat and America assumes she has the best chance to win.

From the NY Times:
A Day Later, Clinton Embraces Spitzers License Effort - The Caucus - Politics - New York Times Blog
A Day Later, Clinton Embraces Spitzer’s License Effort

A day after she appeared to struggle to give her views on the subject, Hillary Rodham Clinton offered support today for Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s effort to award New York driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants, as her campaign sought to contain potentially damaging fallout from what her own supporters saw as a tense and listless debate performance.

Mrs. Clinton’s statement affirming her support of Mr. Spitzer in his office came less than a day after she offered a muddled and hesitant position on the bill, prompting a round of denunciations by her opponents. It signaled the extent to which her advisers viewed that moment as the biggest misstep she made in the debate, and one with long-term potential to undermine her candidacy.
She's so pathetic.
