State troopers were in the neighborhood, trying to serve a warrant on someone. They sent a couple of extra troopers around to guard the back door. Those officers, however, cut through a neighbor's yard, and that's when they came across Sheeba, a very protective family dog, NBC 10's Tim Furlong reported.

"She was doing her job. That's what she does, she protects us," said DiQuan Dill said.

Their mom was there when it happened. "I was in there laying down and, all of a sudden, I heard gunfire -- about five or six rounds," Denise Dill said.

"When I came to the door, they were actually next door, and I said, 'What's the matter? Who shot my dog?' And he was like, 'Your dog bit me.' I said, 'What are you doing in the yard?' And he said, 'We're looking for this guy over here.' I said, 'Why did you have to shoot the dog?' He said, 'She bit me.' I said, 'Why you didn't just get out of the yard?'"

State police said they do apologize and will compensate the family for their loss, Furlong reported.

So state police came on property and shot a dog and they're going to compensate the family, but a landscaper came on after specifically being told not to, then pushed the owner down, and the landscaper got compensated???
That's really messed up, how can you really compensate someone for the loss of a pet? You can't really imo.. I'd want someone fired and then I'd sue

I remember we had a thread awhile back about SWAT team policy being to shoot animals when they go to serve warrants, etc..

This is especially horrible because they shouldn't have even been in her yard to begin with.

That's why families don't give out punishments.

Yes he shot the dog. Yes he was wrong. Yes there's no way to compensate the family............but, the dog also bit him, and there's a significant investment in him as a cop. He shouldn't have been there, but he was and the dog was biting him. Is it worth firing him for killing the dog? I don't think so.

I think the investment in him as a cop is pretty irrelevant, he fucked up huge and caused a family significant grief.. why should he be allowed to continue serving in that role when his judgment is so poor?

Would you want that guy protecting your neighborhood? Maybe checking out some noise he heard around back of your house while on patrol? I sure as hell wouldn't.

I guess I'm also taking into account that he was being attacked. If he was investigating a noise behind my house and someone attacked him I'd expect him to defend himself. He saw it was a dog, he knew it was a dog, he killed it because it was biting his hand. If he went around back and my kid jumped out at him and bit his hand I'd expect the cop would react differently because it was a kid.

So if it was my dog sure I'd be pissed and probably want him fired. But that's an emotional reaction. The logical reaction is to suspend him and send him to extra training or do whatever they do to punish cops who make mistakes, but I don't think this rises to the level of firing him.

Superior Court Judge Releases Congo The Dog Back To Owners

A Superior Court judge signed a consent order to free Congo the German shepherd Thursday afternoon, meaning that the Princeton Township dog, which was declared vicious and condemned to death by a lower court judge on Tuesday for biting and scratching a landscaper, is expected to be released to his owners' custody while his case continues to be appealed.

Congo has been held at the SAVE -- A Friend to Homeless Animals shelter in the township.
The consent order includes several conditions, chief among them that Congo must wear a muzzle whenever he is outside his owners' Stuart Road West house. Also, Congo is not allowed to leave the property of his owners, Guy and Elizabeth James, without prior approval of the township's animal control officer.

Guy James said that he and his family are thrilled with the order.
We "are so ecstatic," James said. "If you want something badly enough, you go get it. On Tuesday, we shed tears of sorrow and today we're shedding tears of joy."

He thanked all his supporters who sent messages from around the world and said the fight to clear Congo's name and have his death sentence reversed is not over.

The Jameses contend Congo should not have been deemed vicious and sentenced to die because he was clearly, but inadvertently, provoked by landscaper Giovanni Rivera in the June 5 incident on the James's 10-acre fenced-in property.

Municipal Court Judge Russell Annich Jr. had ruled that Congo's attack was unprovoked.

Regarding Congo

My daughter and I were just appauled at the whole story of Congo. I never frequent these boards, but we just saw the news broadcast, I googled congo and this came up. Nice forum!! I just hope this judge makes the right decision and lets this dog go free. From what I can see, he was just protecting his family....

Kid wants Congo out!

Hi. I am tolelisa's daughter. And this was my face when I heard about poor little Congo. I love animals and I know a LOT about them. I know that when someone(A stranger) smacks your kids you try to fight them right? Well that is the same thing with a dog. Congo was just protecting his territory and his puppies. It is an INSTINCT!

STORY:
These landskapers were never supposed to come to Congo's house and so Congo came out and started barking. (With his puppies). So they (the humans) were scared and started hitting Congo's puppies with a rake! So the owner came out and started yelling and one of the landskapers pushed her down! Congo bit the guy. (I would do the same thing if I were Congo. Good job, Congo!)

What I think
I think this really isn't fair that this so called (JUDGE) sentenced Congo to death! Now I am furious. First of all these landskapers should be in jail for traspassing. You should all agree. Please write back to tell YOUR feelings.

overlooked

What is overlooked in many posts is that the person attacked was in this country illegally. The news clip I saw that led me to this story said this dog attack sparked an 'immigration debate'. What is there to debate ? An illegal (against the law) alien is in this country and acting with the arrogance that so many of them seem to display, ignored a directive to wait and ends up getting attacked by a dog acting in defense of its owner, an American CITIZEN. Yet it is the CITIZEN who ends up footing a quarter of a million dollar settlement and is told their dog has to die, yet the illegal alien is still in the country. This illegal alien has already resorted to the standard playbook of calling the matter " a racial and politically motivated incident ". Not once did I see or hear this person ever admit to ANY wrongdoing on his part. It's all racial. Isn't this whole scenario a little upside down? When are we, as American Citizens, FINALLY going to tell the Imperial Federal Government to take the gun from our heads and stop taking the money from our pockets to subsidize a system so far removed from its CONSTITUTIONAL roots? A Republic we were, a Social Democracy we have become....scary.....

If a human can get the death penalty, even under less than convincing circumstances, so can a dog. This society we live in has a lust for blood...this is another example.

You make me sick..

WOW......I can't say im surprised to see how many ignorant people care more about the well being of an animal, rather then a human being. I'm a dog lover, myself, but that's no reason for me to be ignorant about the matter. The garderner was doing his job, If a family has such an expensive home to protect, not to mention i saw the owner of the house exit out in a hummer. GET ADT!!! Or keep your animals caged, the husband claims he told the garderner to come later, big deal. Your dogs shouldn't have the viciousness to attack anyone you contracted to do their work in front of your home. The Dog has to pay for a rich yuppies family's ignorance, and a man has wounds that aren't no light scratches. None of you would say the same as this family and the rest of mainly white america is expressing, if you were at the other end, mauled and in a hospital bed bleeding recovering, after trying to complete your job. ALL of you supporting a dog, applaud yourself, you won the ignorant award of the day! This is just another case of harsh reality, a daily dose of RACISM! I hope all of you get to be dictated by a black president, that way all of you racist single minded people can feel "outraged" and pick your brains every night.

I'm so surprised a town dominate of white european and anglo people are out raged by this and are voting against it, yeah, okay! Don't fool yourselves take it up with NY, you wouldnt like our responce, dog would have already been dead!

1. The gardener was not doing his job. Doing his job would have been waiting until he had permission to go on the property. What the gardener was doing is legally called trespassing if the homeowner wanted to make a stink about it.

2. People in this country are entitled to own dogs and not keep them in cages. That is a right this family has. Dogs bark when people come on the property. They didn't attack until their master was pulled down. This is a normal response from a dog.

3. The wealth of the family has nothing to do with this issue. Your blind hatred for "rich yuppies" who drive Hummers is completely irrelevant to the case. Whether they could or couldn't afford ADT or whether they could or couldn't afford a Hummer has no bearing on whether or not they should be entitled to keep dogs who bark at people on their property and attack when their master is knocked down by a stranger.

4. Race has absolutely nothing to do with this case. To use the username "stop ignorance" and then pull the race card on this case is absolutely astounding. Your dislike for wealthy white people shouldn't cloud your judgment here.

And the dog was not vicious enough to be put to death. The prosecutor offered them a plea deal that would have kept Congo alive. The family denied any wrong-doing and that is why they lost, however, they have thusfar been very successful on appeal. The professionals who were holding Congo after the ruling have said Congo was not vicious. I find it very disheartening that people would use this case about animal rights as a means to take out their aggression and dislike for wealthy and/or white people.

90% chance there is huge bias in the story writer. The courts got to hear both sides. I'd probably agree with the decision.

edit: Just noticed the edit to front page, a much more likely story.

I mean what you guys are quick to jump to, the evil landscaper came on to their property to do work for them. He attacked dogs because.... he doesn't like dogs. Then attacked the home owner because fuck her.

Not the more probably they asked the landscaper to come do work, some kind of mistake occured where the dog were still out, the man gets attacked by the dog. I love the 'the dog showed restraint by not attacking until he threw down the owner'. The guy had a big ass rake to defend himself, why do you think the dog didn't go right in. People get retarded over anything that involves dogs and I don't get it for a minute.
