This is a good point. But it's my opinion that he never really had goals or plans to aspire to a political satirist. He started off as a comedian like everyone else in the 80s and did the standard routine just like them. He eventually failed as a comedian which is evident through almost a decade of no real work. He received a political show because he was a cheap name. His show wasn't really that great and he only turned out to be as famous as he is now in politics because of the controversy from his being fired from that show and the "free speech" stuff that came out of it.

You are aware that Politically Incorrect" was on for several years before being picked up by ABC. His transistion into political satire was a metamorphasis not an Im going to do this today decision. ABC picked it up because the show was so successful, and not because Bill Maher was a cheap name.

That is soooo not true! I had been watching him for years on the Comedy channel, it is because he and the show were so successful that ABC piked it up, not because he was a cheap name. He only appears to be that because alot of the viewers didnt know that Politically Incorrect hadalready been running for 3 or so years (dont quote me on that one but I think Im close) and I will say it again,,,, it was because the show was so successful that ABC picked it up!

That's what I'm saying though. People didn't even know the show was running for years. ABC picked it up because it was better than what they had at the time. And after a while Politically Incorrect did start to draw viewers. But it wasn't enough viewers to where ABC was willing to give him a second chance or hold on to him. They canned him rather quickly when they disagreed with the content of his show. They felt he was a liability and let him go. If he was who he is now, they wouldn't have done that.

I dunno we're just goin around in circles. I've never been a big fan of him, but I just kinda see him as starting out comedy in the 80s and doing ok. And then BAM he falls off the face of the earth. Eventually he gets a deal because in my opinion he was a cheap name. Nobody real knew he was on or cared about him. Politics started getting heated and he started to get controversial so he got fired. Couple years later HBO picked him up and now he's truly a success. But he's so far from what he was or what he intended. And in my personal opinion he's a washed up comic who makes a living doing political satire that appeals to liberals.

I dunno, maybe I equate him to Tony Danza. Sure he's got a show and it can be funny. He does ok now. But he's washed up.

IMO making the move was the worst thing he could have done. The time slot alone was a viewer deturant (did I spell that right?). I personnally like Bill Maher, but his business sense was his downfall. Agreeing to the time slot and going to work for a corporation that has to err on the side of political correctness simply by virtue of ratings, especially when Maher knew full well he would be stepping on main stream Americas toes. Im not all together convinced that this wasnt intentional by the network to truly eliminate competion.

404 controversy not found...this is taking pussyhurt to the next level if you find this offensive. i really don't see how he "mocked" the fnc journalists, and i also don't see how jokingly saying we should convert to islam is so bad.

please note, he also made fun of hillary clinton and called her fake.

He calls himself a libertarian, but libertarians laugh at that notion. He's made a name for himself by appealing to mainstream liberals. That's his audience. He can call himself what he wants, but the people who best relate to him are liberal.

His level of success has nothing to do with my opinion of him. Personally I enjoy his show when I watch it. And he often says things I agree with that nobody has the balls to say. As a person, I like the guy. I like him a lot more than I like O'Rielly and have watched him far more.

That doesn't change his history.

I've explained in detail why I claim he's a washed up comedian. You haven't really backed up your point yet.

OK, he's a comedian. He's rated in the 30s in the top 100 comedians of all time (per Comedy Central). He sells out for his standup. He has a highly rated show on HBO.

This is not washed up.

I thought he was still a comedian but instead of telling the more traditional jokes he makes jokes and discussions regarding politics. Whether he was not as successful at the "regular" comedy can be left for debate. The bottom line is he is very successful at political comedy and his show can almost be considered a more serious version of the daily show. They all make jokes and try to have a legitimate discussion in the middle. To call someone a failure, after they have accomplished a ton of things in their career, including being nominated multiple times for Emmy awards is probably inaccurate.
