One would think that if it was something as simple as putting your hand over your heart so you don't appear out of sync with the "norm" and get labeled unpatriotic, he would have thought to do so.

The story behind it? Proper decorum during the star spangled banner doesn't involve holding your hand over your heart. Doing so is fine, but doing it just so you look good isn't a display of patriotism.

As far as the other story about the lapel goes... are you wearing a flag lapel right now? If not do you consider yourself unpatriotic? If you do feel unpatriotic because you aren't wearing one (or you think Obama/Hillary/whoever is unpatriotic because when they aren't wearing a flag lapel) then you don't understand what patriotism is and you have no place judging the patriotism of others.

I'll tell a story now. The weekend after 911 my work gave out flag lapels. I put one on my shirt. The next week I was in class and the professor started talking about how patriotic I must be. I was confused why he signaled me out... until I noticed that I happened to be wearing the shirt I wore to work and my flag lapel was still on it. I was kind of embarrassed at that point. Not because I was signaled out in class... or because I was wearing the lapel... but because a flag lapel has nothing to do with how patriotic I am. Today, I am embarrassed for anyone who makes a big deal about whether or not someone else wears the lapel. Because again, patriotism has nothing to do with wearing a cheap pin to look good on camera and it is embarrassing that people have no understanding about what true patriotism is and would rather judge patriotism by a superficial pin.


edit: I was wrong about the star spangled banner. You are supposed to put your hand over your heart during it (unless you are in uniform). He has done so in the past and the fact he didn't this time says nothing about his patriotism. It was just a stupid blunder that stupid people will cling to throw mud at him.
