water in atlanta.....someone's always gotta be a bitch

But as many residents are trying to curb and conserve their water usage, one 14,000-square-foot property in suburban Atlanta has clocked more than 60 times water the average household uses.

Neighbors are outraged that the man, who lives in his five bedroom, seven bathroom home alone, has used enough water to fill a dozen standard swimming pools, while the rest of the city is so thirsty for water.

But, the water department said it ... has no authority to stop him.

ABC News: One Man's Water Is Another's Outrage

I'm surprised they can't declare a water emergency and shut him down. But this is the reason I'm really posting:

...(the governor) plans to host a prayer meeting next week to ask for more rain...(the governor) announced Wednesday plans to hold a faith service on Tuesday in order to pray for more rain.

A secular group Friday, however, said it would protest the governor's planned prayer service because it violates the separation of church and state, according to The Associated Press.

"A secular group" needs to shut the fuck up. The governor is leading a prayer service, he's not declaring Georgia a christian state.

Man they are in pretty dire straits down there.

I agree he is not violating the separation there. They have prayer services in DC all the time. You can choose to attend, or not.

I think the fact that it was on the capital steps is what people had a problem with..

I had to laugh at the entire affair, doing a Christian rain dance on the capital steps instead of doing his job and planning for better water conservation methods like has happened here in NC..

when the reservoir is down 17 feet I think conservation has its limits.

Being in Atlanta...

Yeah, it sucks. We're on water ban and I know Fulton County will shut off your water if you break the rules they have setup. The governor has mandated that businesses use something like 15% less water than they normally do on pain of having it cut off. Pressure Washing for reasons other than health-related abatement or painting preparation is strictly forbidden. If you do get your water cut off, you have to pay a fine before they'll turn it back on.

Georgia Tech (where I work) actually reclaims rain and dew off buildings and uses that to water their foliage and whatnot. It's pretty neat that they're doing that, but we have recently had so little rain, there's practically none to reclaim.

Oh, and I could give two shits if ol' Sonny is going to lead a prayer service. Though I wouldn't put it passed him to have set it up JUST to slap the separation-of-church-and-state people in the face. He DID recently veto a bill that made it through our congress that would finally allow alcohol to be sold on Sundays... claimed it was his job to watch out for us or some bullshit excuse, but we all know he did it so he wouldn't lose the super-christian backing he has.

Sure, it has limits NOW.. but they had plenty of time to address it and didn't do enough, and now they're in a horrible situation..

Even residents of Atlanta realize that NC has taken the drought conditions more seriously:

Atlanta Water Shortage » Georgia Drought » Blog Archive » North Carolina is taking this more seriously than us

I hope this incident at least ends some of the Republican laughter at environmentalists who think we should be doing all we can to address environmental issues before they become huge problems.

Funny thing about the whole prayer service is that there was rain forecasted for the day after the prayer service, but it didn't come as expected..

Clearly Jesus hates Atlanta.

Jesus hates Atlanta because of all the gays we have here, duh!

But I agree, it should have been taken more seriously a lot longer ago. But at least it's not 5 or so years ago when the water infrastructure in Atlanta was leaking so bad that literally millions and millions of gallons of water were being lost daily.

An elected official shouldn't be doing ANY "leading" of religious crap like this. I mean come on, they are PRAYING on the step of the capitol or whatever for rain? Ridiculous.

it's ridiculous in that it's not going to work, but it hardly falls under separation of church and state.

it rained last night!

Not very much. Of course, unless a hurricane sits on top of us for about a week, we'll never make up what we're down this year

You don't think an elected official should be able to lead any religious things on his own time? I can sorta see the complaint about it being done at the capitol building, but forbidding them to practice their religion is a bit much.

Can the governor not stand on the capital steps and say "Merry Christmas, Happy Chuaunuackkkaa, Ubeebee <click click> Kwanaa" or is that a violation of church and state?

I think it'd have been kinda funny had there been flood-producing rains after the prayer... like, cars being washed off roads, parts of the city destroyed.

Then we could all look at those that prayed and said "What did you do?!?!"

Personally I have no problem with him conducting prayer at the capitol during off hours. It's not being endorsed by the state specifically, it's his own personal thing. And if people had done it WITHOUT him being present, it wouldn't have even made the news.

Up until this year our reservoirs were down an average of 20'-25' feet across most of north Texas for the past 3 or 4 years. There were some lakes that were quite literally drying up. Governor Perry never did a rain dance.

Then this year we get inundated ... Last I checked our rain total in the DFW area was just shy of 15" above normal on the year (and in an average year we only get around 41" of rain).
