would you give up the right to vote for $1M?

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1107/6892.html

......66 percent said they'd forfeit their vote for a free ride to NYU. And half said they'd give up the right to vote forever for $1 million.

I would

for a million dollars? I probably would because I live in an area that is overwhelmingly democratic and my vote really is insignificant.

I figure, with $1M I could quit work and (if I really cared about a candidate) I'd have more free time to convince many more people to vote for him/her.

Of course, that also may just be me rationalizing it

It won't buy a mansion and a few supercars, but $1M would set me for life. Pay off my house, fund my kids' education, fund my retirement, invest and draw a measly 7% being insanely conservative.......beyond paying off debt I wouldn't touch the principle for years/decades.

I'm 38. Give me $1M (after tax) and I'm checking out, baby. I'd never have a career again. I'd work but when/where/how I chose. I'd most likely end up in a school so I'd work minimal hours and they'd cover health...that'd be the biggest expense I'd have left.

I don't think it would go quite that far. Not knowing your situation though Maybe it would.
If I paid off my house and funded my daughters college education , I might have 700,000 left. If you want to generate income, you probably won't make 7% a year. The equity market averages something like 8% a year over the long term. Fixed income is much less. Say 5%.

5% of 700,000 isn't much. 35,000. And that would mean that I spent all of the gains and the principle would never grow. By retirement, 700,000 wouldn't fund me for more than a few years after inflation and what not.
Now if you wanted to keep working and invest the 700,000 that might take care of your retirement and allow you to stop saving now and spend more of what you make.

With no mortgage, no car payment, no retirement, and no college to worry about you'd still spend $3k/month?

Insurances, gas, food, electric/water/etc, various fees, property tax.........rough guess that's $1k/month. The other $2k would be play money. You could consistently spend $2k/month on "fun," knowing if you spent $1500 instead then you could put away $500+/month toward retirement?

reminds me of something attributed to churchill.....

Churchill: Madam, would you sleep with me for five million pounds?
Socialite: My goodness, Mr. Churchill... Well, I suppose... we would have to discuss terms, of course...
Churchill: Would you sleep with me for five pounds?
Socialite: Mr. Churchill, what kind of woman do you think I am?!
Churchill: Madam, we've already established that. Now we are haggling about the price.

Hard choice, but I don't think I would.. After all you fatcat millionaires had 1 million dollars and no votes, the 1 million dollars would mean less and my vote would count for way more

they asked the individual, "would YOU take $1M to never vote again?" they didn't make any references to offering $1M to anyone who would trade in that right.

If they offered me $1M, yes. If they said they were makng that offer to everyone...............that's a different question.
