Posted this on the Election 2008 thread:

Mormons are Christians. They believe 100% in the Bible and Jesus Christ. They officially use the King James Version.

They also believe in the Book of Mormon which was found (1820), translated and published by Joseph Smith in 1830. Straight Dope Staff Report: What's up with Mormonism?

It is this latter aspect to Mormonism that some call it a cult. What's interesting is, "It is very evident that the Book of Mormon owes much to the King James Version. Since this particular version of the Bible was not translated until 1611, it means that the Book of Mormon cannot be an ancient work as Joseph Smith claimed."

Therefore, Romney is a Christian AND part of a cult (which may not sit well with many Christians who believe the Bible to be the true and only word of God).

Just my humble interpretation...

Fed Up

Cult

A religion or religious sect generally considered to be extremist or false, with its followers often living in an unconventional manner under the guidance of an authoritarian, charismatic leader.
I'm thinking not. But of course, if you are an atheist you might consider anyone that goes to church as being in a "Cult".

Actually, I'm more inclined to consider all belief systems to be religions.

I can't speak for all Atheists though.

When will "in the closet" Mormon, Senator Harry Reid defend the religion of Romney?

I will not hold my breath!

It is an outright prevarication that Mitt's church is not Christian. It is more First Century Christian than any other denomination. Members of the church believe every word of the original Greek New Testament, and spend twice as much time studying the Bible as they do studying the Book of Mormon.
Teenagers display Christian characteristics more frequently than any other Christian denomination.

They also believe the garden of eden is in Missouri or something...it is basically Christianity for people who really want America to play an important role in the history of the religion.

Considering that I'd call myself an agnostic, I do find it hard to call Mormonism 'a cult' when all religions take huge leaps of faith to follow and are no better than Mormonism.

No, core beliefs are extremely different. Which is why the majority of non-mormon Christians don't consider Mormon to be a Christian faith.

Except the parts that declare Jesus as divine, of course. Every word except those.

Mind you, I'd gladly take a mormon president over a socialist president. After all, it's the President's job to make decisions, not teach religion.

Interesting tidbit about this, apparently the calls are being made from a company whose owner is friends with Romney, has donated to his campaign, and has put people who are in a position to talk to the media about the calls on the list.. fueling speculation that perhaps Romney is behind this in order to drum up sympathy for his campaign while painting the other Republican candidates (specifically McCain) as playing dirty / being character assassins..
