Clinton: Saudi rape verdict 'an outrage' - CNN.com

(CNN) -- U.S. presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has joined international condemnation of the sentence handed out to a Saudi rape victim: 200 lashes and six months in prison.

Labeling it "an outrage", Sen. Clinton urged the U.S. government to protest the decision.

"The Bush administration has refused to condemn the sentence and said it will not protest an internal Saudi decision," the Democratic presidential frontrunner said in a statement.

"I urge President Bush to call on King Abdullah to cancel the ruling and drop all charges against this woman."

The sentence resulted from an incident in March 2006, when the woman, then aged 18 and engaged to be married, and an unrelated man, were abducted from a mall in Qatif, Saudi Arabia by a group of seven men. She was later raped.

In October, the men were convicted and sentenced to between two and nine years in prison for the assault. She was convicted of violating the kingdom's strict Islamic law by not having a male guardian with her at the mall.

The woman was originally sentenced in October 2006 to 90 lashes -- but when she appealed that sentence, the court more than doubled it to 200 lashes.

A court source told Arab News, an English-language Middle Eastern daily newspaper, that the woman's sentence was increased after the woman spoke to the media about the case.

But a Saudi Justice Ministry statement said the permanent committee of the Supreme Judicial Council recommended an increased sentence for the woman after further evidence against her came to light when she appealed her original sentence.

The case has drawn a strong reaction from Washington where State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said U.S. officials had "expressed astonishment" at the sentence, though not directly to Saudi officials.

He added that "it is within the power of the Saudi government to take a look at the verdict and change it."

Earlier the husband of the victim said his wife is "a crushed human being," and blamed one judge with a personal vendetta -- and not the Saudi judicial system -- for treating her as a criminal.

But he said Saudi society was respectful of women and he had faith that his wife would get justice.

"From the outset, my wife was dealt with as a guilty person who committed a crime," said her 24-year-old husband. "She was not given any chance to prove her innocence or describe how she was a victim of multiple brutal rapes."

The husband, who asked not to be named, spoke to CNN Senior Arab Affairs Editor Octavia Nasr. He spoke in Arabic and Nasr translated his words into English....<continues>

Where is the invasion force? Clearly the Saudi Government is condoning rape or at the least mistreating it's women with antiquated policy. I think at least some harsh sabre rattling from Bush towards the Saudis would be nice...but we all know that's not going to happen. Only people we dislike get admonished for atrocities like this.

See, and I thought the saber rattling was wrong when we were doing it to Iran and Iraq (you know, pre-saber-using). But you're PRO-threats to foreign countries?

How about some consistency? Isn't that what Democrats are bashed for all the time? Flip flopping...changing positions? My PERSONAL belief is if the world doesn't see consistent activity by our government they think we're idiots...and they treat us as such.

Is the saber rattling towards Iran going to stop? No...so why not do it towards someone doing the exact same things?

Man, we have been playing favorites for YEARS, and despite all the trouble (or, as the CIA calls it, "blowback"), we still do it.

There were 50 different reasons thrown out there as to WHY we invaded Iraq...as each one was proven false, more were made up...so I have no idea what the real reasons were.

We are not going to say or do anything about this. The Saudis have all that oil so they can do just about anything they want, and they are hot heads like so many in that area so if we say something they are bound to retaliate in some way like slow down oil shipments. We sure ain't living in a John Wayne world, and have not been for a long time, and it makes us act like whimps many times.

If reason A is a reason you go to war with one country why not use the same reasoning to go to war with another country or at least chastise that second country instead of coddle their balls?

I remember when Hillary chastised other candidates for speaking about foreign affairs saying something like it isn't there place to interrupt foreign policy at the moment while still candidates. She seems to like having it both ways.

Just like this administration apparently...btw, she is condemning this and normally does condemn things that are bad...whether our "Friends" do them or not.
