| technology is neat Buy HP Pavilion dv9500t series, HP Pavilion and Compaq Presario Notebook PCs and Laptop Computers direct from the HP Home & Home Office Store It's on it's way! I loaded it to the gills. fastest processor available, 4 gigs of ram, 256 meg discrete video, high def monitor. Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit. Wireless with 802.11-N and bluetooth support. It should be here before christmas! I'm psyched. I'm not sure about Vista, but you pretty much can't buy anything unless it comes with Vista. | ||||

| Vista is shit, and XP consistently outperforms it. If you have to use windows, stick with XP. | ||||

| Ubuntu is great for people who want to get into Linux but haven't ever used it before, it's a very linux-noob friendly distro.. even has an update manager for software packages. | ||||

| Distro = Distribution. There are about a billion and one different Operating Systems that use Linux as it's core Kernel. Ubuntu is the most popular one due to it's ease of use. OSX is actually based on the Linux kernel. | ||||

You should try a Live CD to see if you like it, that way you don't have to commit to anything if you don't have a spare HD lying around (or don't want to partition) for dual boot. I only use Windows for gaming and school projects that require me to use Windows.. the rest of the time I'm booting Ubuntu, though I haven't been using it much lately because I've been doing more gaming to relieve stress as finals approach.. As Microsoft continues its crusade to strangle consumer rights I'll use Windows less and less. | ||||

| By LiveCD he's basically saying the installer is bundled in a LiveCD. Just burn the ISO to a disk, keep the disc in your drive and reboot. It will load Ubuntu off the CD instead of Windows and you'll have basically a fully working Linux system with internet and everything. You can install drivers for peripherals like Printers if you choose to install it. I think it may even come with some HP printer support if my memory serves me correctly. It'll be a little slow considering it's running off a CD, but it works well. | ||||

| A toy? eh Yes and no. My desktop PC at home is getting a bit old. I built it originally back in 2002 and I upgraded the processor once and the video card once. It's been pretty solid the whole time but it's reaching a point where it won't run most of the new games out there and some of the newer video editing software won't run at all because the processor is old technology. So it's time for an upgrade. Usually 5 years is about all you can expect from a PC anyway. So since I need a new one anyway I figured what he heck. I could use a laptop with my night classes and stuff and I can keep this PC and let my wife use it to do her lesson plans and write e-mails and such. Plus it's sort of found money. The acquisition of my company was finalized today so they will be paying out all of our options early next week. It's enough so that I can spend a little extra on a top of the line notebook without feeling guilty about it | ||||
