I am very afraid of another terrorist attack

not because I think I or anyone I know will die, as the chances of that happening are miniscule, but because that is the only thing that could save the Republicans from losing power. Without a terrorist attack, I don't see how the present trend against Republicans could reverse.

Do the terrorists realize this? Yes, without a doubt, which is probably why they'll attack, because they'd love nothing more than Bush clones to run the country. Bin Laden would love for us to spend another 20 years in Iraq draining the treasury and whipping up islamist supporters. Anyone who thinks Bin Laden is afraid of Bush is fucking insane. They want a war with the West, and they know the only way to defeat a superpower is drain us slowly and turn world opinion against us, which Bush is doing a wonderful job of. And as far as domestic policy goes, who do you think Islamists would want to make our laws? Pot smoking, abortion loving, porn distributing liberals? Or social conservatives? I'm having a VERY hard time seeing how an Islamist would want the Democrats in power.

You watch V for Vendetta recently? The group in power staged it's own tragedy so the people thought they needed them so much, they gave them more power.

Fucked up shit man... but probably not too far off base.

Or they'd start comparing it to the Madrid bombings before their presidential election, in which case I'd have to school people because the American media totally misrepresented what happened.

Why shouldnt we expect another terrorist attack? We have created more enemies than ever. Homeland Security is a joke. It seems to me that one of the very first things we should have done following the 9/11 attack was to secure our borders. We had plenty of money, might and fortitude to do so. So why wasnt it a priority? We were making great progress in Afganistan and this country was totally united with that action and the world was behind us as well. We were fighting the War on Terror, all was good. Then we decided to take on ANOTHER war. Five years later, Homeland Security is still a joke.

We should all be afraid, we are far less safe at this point in the War on Terror than we should be.

I'm sure terrorists love being hunted down and killed. I mean, if a Democrat got elected it would all stop. Where is the fun in that???

I'm sure everyone in this administration knew that, but war contracts are supremely profitable to the higher-ups that love this sort of thing. Of course we could have shored up our borders, secured ports, scanned incoming goods -- and maybe once enforced the terrorist watch lists for air travel (which we have never done, on the day of 9/11 and otherwise).

BUT

The goal was always to strenghten our military with billions of tax dollars; for "The New American Century", everyone from Cheney on down is on board and this project is self-admitted.

We shouldn't be afraid. Fear leads to voting in politicians who abuse that fear for their own agenda.. and we've seen where that leads us

We should be determined to do what is needed to ensure a safer country, like the obvious steps of border security and port security, etc, etc.. but without compromising the great principles the country was founded on.

If we're so scared that we're willing to radically change our way of life because someone blew up a building, we've already lost.

so now it's been reduced to nothing but a simple 'blowing up a building'

That's what it was.
It was horrible. It was bad. But it was someone blowing up a building. With planes.

Should we fight back? Of course.
Should we give up what has made our country so great? Unlike this Administration and their many conservative followers, I don't believe we should.

One way of fighting back is to ensure America remains the same nation that it was before the terrorist attack.

Does it mean we shouldn't take steps to increase security? Obviously not.

But to suggest that we must give up our principles of freedom and liberty to achieve it is just plain stupid.

Im afraid precisely because of the politicians that were voted in.

yes, it a completely simplified way of looking at things. but since we are not such simple creatures, it was obviously much more than that, and they knew it. that's why they chose the targets they did.

the same nation that was suceptible to the attacks in the first place?

The symbolism of the attack wasn't lost on me. However, it's their symbolism. Is our nation one building? One monument? One city? No.

America is an ideal. Once you abandon those ideals, you no longer have the same great country that people have fought and died to protect.

it was very symbolic to americans too. it's not theirs alone.

the rest of your post is only more bush bashing. it suggests no alternative solution. it sounds very much like the democratic platform.

Would you care to point out where I mentioned Bush?

It's quite telling that you feel I was bashing Bush by defending the principles that embody what America is and which have made America great though..

There were no "steps" because there wasn't a requirement to lay out a plan, it wasn't part of our discussion, and it looks you're merely putting it out there now because you lack a coherent response to my points.
