Gay marriage is an issue that the Democrats have been pushing!?! I'll have to check, but i'm pretty sure they weren't the ones that added those ballot initiatives last election cycle....

| In my state and surrounding states they certainly have been pushing it. They're pushing for it as hard as the GOP is pushing against it.

| If I remember correctly, they were added as ballot initiatives as a result of some clamoring to get married (see San Fran and Seattle) only to have their marriage licenses withdrawn. Had there not been some big desire to push gay marriage in the first place, there would not have been the controversy that ensued. | ||||

| These bills had nothing to do with adding religious holidays. It had to do with recognizing and paying respect to religions and the people who practice them. But my view is that the federal government shouldn't be involved in religious holidays. The idea of Christmas being a recognized federal holiday has nothing to do with their votes and refusal to pay respects to Christianity while giving respect to other religions. They were presented with a choice. Their choice was to vote in favor of paying respects to Christianity and Christmas or to oppose paying respect to the Christianity and Christmas. They opted to oppose it. They then opted to vote in favor of paying respect another religion. Their votes should not play favorites to certain religions. | ||||

If our country decided that Christmas was not the holiday they wanted to celebrate, but instead wanted to celebrate Ramadan, then yes, that's what our officials should do. Unfortunately for you in this situation (and your argument) that's not what our people and country want, therefore our elected officials have no right to do so.

| It's symbolic and that is important and as far as being as important as others issues it is not, but even if they were working on the war and other more important issues five days a week all day there is time for other things. | ||||

While symbolism may be ok at times, I think we need less symbolism and more action, especially in time of war.

| It was pretty pathetic to claim a 5 day work week and then not live up to it.. especially when something like that is so easy to check on and call people out. I think for as much as they get paid, they should be spending a lot more time legislating. | ||||

| I agree, but I understand their need to be in two places at once, especially for people who don't live near DC. It was a tough schedule to live up to, which means they probably shouldn't have said it in the first place. They knew what they were getting themselves in to. You would think they'd blow some of the budget on some form of videoconferencing by now. How much would it cost per person? $5-10k? Whatever it is I'm sure it's less than it costs shuttling them back and forth all the time. | ||||

Certainly that is not their only purpose in Congress?
