Democrats vote for Ramadan but against Christmas

What gives?

9 Democrats voted against a resolution to honor Christmas, yet just prior voted YES to Ramadan and Diwali. Why?

Here are the Democrats that voted this way:

The nine Members voting NO were Rep. Gary Ackerman (D-NY), Rep. Yvette Clarke (D-NY), Rep. Diana DeGette (D-CO), Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-FL) (FL), Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA), Rep. Jim McDermott (D-WA), Rep. Bobby Scott (D-VA), Rep. Pete Stark (D-CA), and Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D-CA). None of the nine voted against resolutions honoring the Islamic holiday of Ramadan and the Hindu holiday of Diwali.

As Allah nicely puts it:

The left sometimes seem to have it in its mind that the Establishment Clause contains some sort of equal protection component that makes it okay to endorse minority religions, however symbolically, while scrupulously resisting the faith of the majority lest it burst into theocracy. No such doctrine, boys.
So what gives?

9 democrats really represent the hundreds on capital hill and the thousands in state and local governments huh?

Damn that liberal left an its "war" on Christmas! I mean I only see a christmas tree and hear christmas music in stores (songs which include references to Jesus) like every place I go here in the liberal sewer that is NYC. I heard it just yesterday in Best Buy (those fucking hippies)

In contrast I almost never hear any references to Ramadan and only hear about Diwali from my hindu friends - and as another poster pointed out, he doesn't even know what it is. Some war huh?

Maybe they figured we don't need a resultion to honor Christmas seeing as it's already a national holiday, we already have a white house christmas tree and all of that stuff I don't think congress has any business honoring any religous observances really. What does it accomplish? They have enough work to do that I think it's morally wrong to be spending time on inconsequential garbage like this.

I think it has more to do with not caring about offending Christians vs minorities to be honest. While the mentality of not wasting time on Christians holidays may have held water, that mentality did not carry over to minorities.

It's only a few Democrats, some of which are prominent, but overall it's a small number.

while it's probably wrong to waste time on it, time was being wasted on it.....why did they go out of their way to vote no for christmas when they has just voted yes for ramadan and dilowi (whatever) AND there weren't any no votes for those?

it's hypocritical to say 'we already recognize christmas' and vote no when they had just participated in a yes vote for other religions

The whole thing is inconsequential bullshit, I don't care if they vote no to Christmas, Ramadan, New Years, Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy. What should offend Christians is that even during this time of year which is supposed to remind us of the ideals of jesus - Love, respect, doing the right thing etc - our Congress, instead of addressing the more pressing issues of our day like the war in Iraq, are disrespecting us and our troops by using their time over this nonsense. And the so called Christians who are "out raged" and feel "oppressed" by the alleged war on Christmas are petty hypocrites for not realizing this.

Christmas is already recognized as a federal holiday. The whole "oppressed majority" shtick is getting tired.

I don't see what this bill was supposed to accomplish other than to show how butthurt these loons are over the previous votes about Ramadan and Diwali. (The guy who introduced this bill voted "present" on those bills).

These are two almost identical bills. Bills like this are brought up essentially every year to show our government supports these religions.

HRES 635 EH

H. Res. 635

In the House of Representatives, U. S.,

October 2, 2007.

Whereas it is estimated that there are approximately 1,500,000,000 Muslims worldwide;

Whereas since the terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001, some threats and incidents of violence have been directed at law-abiding, patriotic Americans of African, Arab, and South Asian descent, particularly members of the Islamic faith;

Whereas, on September 14, 2001, the House of Representatives passed a concurrent resolution condemning bigotry and violence against Arab-Americans, American Muslims, and Americans from South Asia in the wake of the terrorist attacks on the United States;

Whereas some extremists have attempted to use selective interpretations of Islam to justify and encourage hatred, persecution, oppression, violence and terrorism against the United States, the West, Israel, other Muslims, and non-Muslims;

Whereas some Muslims in the United States and abroad have courageously spoken out in rejection of interpretations of Islam that justify and encourage hatred, violence, and terror, and in support of interpretations of and movements within Islam that justify and encourage democracy, tolerance and full civil and political rights for Muslims and those of all faiths;

Whereas Ramadan is the holy month of fasting and spiritual renewal for Muslims worldwide, and is the 9th month of the Muslim calendar year; and

Whereas the observance of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan commenced at dusk on September 13, 2007, and continues for one lunar month: Now, therefore, be it

Resolved, That the House of Representatives--

(1) recognizes the Islamic faith as one of the great religions of the world;

(2) expresses friendship and support for Muslims in the United States and worldwide;

(3) acknowledges the onset of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting and spiritual renewal, and conveys its respect to Muslims in the United States and throughout the world on this occasion;

(4) rejects hatred, bigotry, and violence directed against Muslims, both in the United States and worldwide; and

(5) commends Muslims in the United States and across the globe who have privately and publicly rejected interpretations and movements of Islam that justify and encourage hatred, violence, and terror.

Attest:

Clerk.

HRES 847 IH

110th CONGRESS

1st Session

H. RES. 847

Recognizing the importance of Christmas and the Christian faith.

IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

December 6, 2007

Mr. KING of Iowa (for himself, Mr. AKIN, Mrs. BACHMANN, Mr. BAKER, Mr. BARRETT of South Carolina, Mr. BISHOP of Utah, Mr. BOOZMAN, Mr. BRADY of Texas, Mr. BROUN of Georgia, Mr. BURTON of Indiana, Mr. CARTER, Mr. CONAWAY, Mr. DAVID DAVIS of Tennessee, Mr. DOOLITTLE, Mr. FEENEY, Mr. FORTENBERRY, Ms. FOXX, Mr. FRANKS of Arizona, Mr. GINGREY, Mr. GOHMERT, Mr. HAYES, Mr. HERGER, Mr. ISSA, Mr. SAM JOHNSON of Texas, Mr. JONES of North Carolina, Mr. JORDAN of Ohio, Mr. KINGSTON, Mr. KLINE of Minnesota, Mr. KUHL of New York, Mr. LAHOOD, Mr. LAMBORN, Mr. LAMPSON, Mr. DANIEL E. LUNGREN of California, Mr. MCCAUL of Texas, Mr. MCINTYRE, Mrs. MCMORRIS RODGERS, Mr. MILLER of Florida, Mrs. MUSGRAVE, Mrs. MYRICK, Mr. NEUGEBAUER, Mr. POE, Mr. SALI, Mr. SHADEGG, Mr. SMITH of Texas, Mr. STEARNS, Mr. TERRY, Mr. TIAHRT, Mr. WALBERG, Mr. WELDON of Florida, Mr. WILSON of South Carolina, Mr. DAVIS of Kentucky, and Mrs. DRAKE) submitted the following resolution; which was referred to the Committee on Foreign Affairs

RESOLUTION

Recognizing the importance of Christmas and the Christian faith.

Whereas Christmas, a holiday of great significance to Americans and many other cultures and nationalities, is celebrated annually by Christians throughout the United States and the world;

Whereas there are approximately 225,000,000 Christians in the United States, making Christianity the religion of over three-fourths of the American population;

Whereas there are approximately 2,000,000,000 Christians throughout the world, making Christianity the largest religion in the world and the religion of about one-third of the world population;

Whereas Christians identify themselves as those who believe in the salvation from sin offered to them through the sacrifice of their savior, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and who, out of gratitude for the gift of salvation, commit themselves to living their lives in accordance with the teachings of the Holy Bible;

Whereas Christians and Christianity have contributed greatly to the development of western civilization;

Whereas the United States, being founded as a constitutional republic in the traditions of western civilization, finds much in its history that points observers back to its roots in Christianity;

Whereas on December 25 of each calendar year, American Christians observe Christmas, the holiday celebrating the birth of their savior, Jesus Christ;

Whereas for Christians, Christmas is celebrated as a recognition of God's redemption, mercy, and Grace; and

Whereas many Christians and non-Christians throughout the United States and the rest of the world, celebrate Christmas as a time to serve others: Now, therefore be it

Resolved, That the House of Representatives--

(1) recognizes the Christian faith as one of the great religions of the world;

(2) expresses continued support for Christians in the United States and worldwide;

(3) acknowledges the international religious and historical importance of Christmas and the Christian faith;

(4) acknowledges and supports the role played by Christians and Christianity in the founding of the United States and in the formation of the western civilization;

(5) rejects bigotry and persecution directed against Christians, both in the United States and worldwide; and

(6) expresses its deepest respect to American Christians and Christians throughout the world.

What this shows is some politicians are willing to support Islam in ways they're not willing to support Christianity.

it applies directly to what you wrote.......you say "we're in a war, why are they talking about or acting on anything not related to that?!?!!?"

apparently there's an expectation that the govt still does other business, even when we're at war.
