| Here's a Big Voice that could be an American Idol: http://web.go2db.com/media/singer.mov Speak softly and carry a big voice By Laura E. Davis Staff Writer Article Launched: 12/15/2007 10:40:55 PM PST He speaks so softly and gently you'd never guess he wants to use his voice to make a living. But just talking is not what matters to Ashley Faatoalia. He is preserving his vocal cords for the stage. The Torrance native is embarking on a journey of trying to turn his passion for singing into a career. It's something the 23-year-old tenor has dreamed about since childhood, when he took music lessons and fantasized about making it as a pop singer. "I was always exposed to music in some form," he said. "I completely loved and emulated Michael Jackson." Today, he will find himself in a less flashy role when he tries out for the L.A. Opera's Domingo-Thornton Young Artist Program at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles. The program provides young singers with voice, acting and foreign language training, and gives them the opportunity to work alongside professionals, said L.A Opera spokesman Gary Murphy. Only 65 of the nearly 400 singers who applied will get to try out for the program this year. Faatoalia is one of 25 from Southern California. Auditions are held in Los Angeles and New York, and although the program doesn't have a set number that will be picked, just nine singers were chosen last year. If Faatoalia makes it through the first round of auditions, he will be called back to sing on Jan. 6. This would give him a chance to sing in front of one of his role models: Placido Domingo. "Once I started studying classical, he was the person that I was really interested in," Faatoalia said. "It's ridiculous to think that I might have the chance to audition for (him)." Faatoalia, who received a bachelor's degree in music and vocal performance from Chapman University in Orange last year, has three arias - from "Street Scene," "The Magic Flute" and "The Marriage of Figaro" - prepared for the audition.
