They were the face of the network. Back before CNN and the other 24/7 news channels, network news was it for televised national/international reporting. Being the anchor of those shows and speaking to millions of people every night as one of their 3 available sources for televised national/international news was a big deal.

True, but what made one better than the other? If the anchor doesn't produce the news or give opinion about it, then aren't they still just a prop? Is this some quirk of human nature that people feel attached to familiar faces or something?

I tried watching tonight. Doesn't seem too much different than any other newscast...except the lingering possibility that one day she'll do the news naked.

They may be a prop but that doesn't mean they weren't important figures for the network. They still are important figures for the network; they just reach less people each night because Wolf Blitzer is cockblocking them. People love to be part of a group and follow a leader
