If it is going to be a high powered home theater system I wouldn't run cat5 the wire guage is too small. For most moderate/low power systems it should be ok. Problem is you'll load up the amplifier pushing the signal any distance through thin guage wire. Do you know how the signal is being carried via the cat 5.

Electricy is carried along the surface of wires, not through the middle. Speakers don't need many amperes to push sound, but a lot of surface area to reduce noise. Cat 5 is higher gague than individual speakerwire strands, and grouping the 8 of them together is plenty fine to reduce noise for long runs. High bandwidth data signals need better quality wire than speakers anyway, which is why cat5 is usually shielded and twisted.

Cat5 is popular in audio now-a-days for a reason... because it works well.

Speaker wire is thinner than cat5. Audio guy said he's going to run power through it, too.

As long as thats how its carried you're correct. I wasn't sure how Cat5 carried the audio signal.

Depends on the speaker wire, the individual strands may be but a good 12 gauge wire is very hard to beat
