Illegal Alien's Son Killed In Iraq

Here is an URL to a site with some of this story on it: Coastal Post Online Article October, 2007 In my opinion, I think this man's son more than paid for his father to be in this country.

I didn't know that was listed as one of the ways to get a valid green card.

So the father should become a citizen because his son joined the military?

I don't see the logic in that.

I don't either.

But I do object to those who might claim his son should not have been considered an American. We need to solve illegal immigration without taking away that basic right at birth.

I think this is a nice thing that should be done, but I don't agree that his son "paid with his life" for his father to stay in the country. If I were a congressman I would support a green card for him.

Because you're here illegally and your son signs up to be in the military and subsequently dies it does NOT give you the right to be here.

Now having said that, I would definately support a green card for this guy because his son truly is a hero and it is obvious their family loves this country. Get him a green card and get him on the path to citizenship.

there is merit to the argument that just being born here should not have made you a citizen.

Its hard to approach this without sounding ungrateful and it is difficult to word right... but I worry about the precendence this would set.

Obviously the intent of the founders was to give that right to citizens of welcomed immigrants. I don't wish to play around with that right. I would prefer we make it clear who is welcome and what legal process is needed to live and have children here. I don't see the need for some number of guest workers to mean we must accept a huge illegal population here. If you are a guest you come here to work, earn your keep, and then go home!

I think military service should lead to citizenship for those who can pass the various tests (english, physical, etc).. but as far as for relatives of that person? No, thanks.

I don't think that just because this guy had a brave son he should get any special consideration personally.

By being born to two legal citizens of this country.

The argument I'm talking about is that illegal aliens are not subject to the jurisdiction of the US, so the 14th amendment doesn't apply, and their children should not be considered citizens.
