Friend plans wedding on what's normally time for family holiday

So one of my very closest friends is planning on getting married this next summer. The original month for the wedding to be was June. In the meantime, I plan a vacation for the week of July 4th with my family in FL. After all, July 4th is typically a time spent with family, right? Well, today my friend informs me that his wedding will be July 4th weekend.

He proceeds to ask 'is that ok with you?'. How do I respond to this? How can I say 'no, pick another date for your wedding'? Who plans weddings during times for family holidays anyway?

What do I say?

Looks like I'll be spending July 4th in Boston instead of FL

I'd tell him you had plans, but you'd be willing to cancel on your family and make up some story about the tickets not being refundable or whatever and being out money (which is probably true anyway). If enough people tell him they had plans that weekend perhaps he'll change it.

yeah, that sucks actually. although i was in a wedding on June 30th a couple years back and that was the friday of the july 4th weekend so to speak....

i would just tell him you already made vacation plans but you can switch it for him.... hopefully he's only getting married once.

Probably easier to remember the anniversaries if it's on a national holiday

I'd say do whatever you really want to do, your family would understand if one of your closest friends is getting married and whatnot, and I'm sure he'd understand if you would rather spend the time with your family considering the plans had already been made, especially if like J said, tickets had already been bought

no, almost everyone came. We did let people know WAY ahead of time. We did our planning more than a year in advance. We figured since alot of people would need to travel from MA down to NJ that we would do it when there was a three day weekend so that people had an easier time traveling and not using up thier vacation days. It was pretty nice, the reception was at this place up on a hill so all night you could see fireworks going off in the surrounding towns.

We book our summer vacation a year ahead. We go with my inlaws down to Cape May every summer. Sometimes they book the place for next year while they are still there. So you're not the only one. I remember one summer someone had a wedding and it was during that time. We didn't go to the wedding. It happens I guess.

Well I keep saying "we". My involvement in planning was minimal.

it's not anal, it's polite

my brother is getting married in july. last august his future wife sent out fridge magnets with "save the date" because they didn't have invitations picked out but she wanted to make sure nobody in the family planned their vacation during that time.

Fireworks? Man they don't sell fireworks in the liberal north east. Those things are like heroin. They will shoot you on site if you get caught with fireworks. When I lived in MA we used to drive up to NH to get them. Live free or die man! The MA state troopers would actually look for people doing it too and pull you over as soon as you crossed the border. It's nuts.
