Why don't we learn our lesson from Reagan's amnesty?

Anytime a debate about the illegal immigration issue arises, at some point the idea that 'well Reagan gave 2 million immigrants amnesty, so why not do it now?'. Well, to that I ask, isn't that all the more reason not to? Reagan gave 2 million immigrants amnesty when he was president. Around the world, everybody noticed, and those who wanted to come into the country probably thought 'hey, they'll do it agian, and I don't have to mess with all that legal shit'. Well, now we have 12 million illegal immigrants wanting amnesty. Why should we give it to them? in 20 yrs, will it be over 100 million wanting amnesty, because we gave 12 million amnesty in 2010? Why haven't we learned our lesson? At what point will you say 'no more'?

If we don't control the flow of immigrants into the country, we'll become like the Balkans...the Un-united States of America.

I have never heard anyone every argue that immigration is bad. ususally people say that we need to control who comes in and out for security reasons... you seem to be arguing that allowing immigrants into our country at all is a bad thing... is is just that there are alot of them?

I'm arguing that it should be controlled, and that illegals are just that, illegal. I'm not saying immigration as a whole is bad. But giving them amnesty is NOT the answer.

We thrive on immigration, it's great for the country and the economy, so we should encourage it.. but that immigration has to take place through a legal framework, and we have to secure our borders imo before any real reform happens.

Without a secure border, we will never stop the influx of illegals.. and as their numbers increase, it becomes a harder question on what to do with them. I don't understand why the fence that's been funded hasn't been built, maybe someone else does?

I'm kind of torn on whether or not the ones who are here should be rounded up like cattle and shipped off to their country of origin, especially if they have children (who are now citizens, which I also don't like), and lives established for so many years.. but there definitely has to be some sort of penalty involved for violating our laws and crossing the border illegally.

Reagan presided over US policies that destroyed Latin America. Maybe he felt guilty.

You really got that from what he wrote? As I read it I was thinking "he wants to stop illegal immigration, and thinks reagan fucked up by giving some of them amnesty."

Really? You got "no immigration at all" from what he wrote?
