Thompson on Christianity and the role of government

Fred gets it.

I don't know anybody that has put as simply and correctly as this in a long time.

A woman asked him if he would “as a Christian, as a conservative” continue President Bush’s programs to combat global AIDS.

“Christ didn’t tell us to go to the government and pass a bill to get some of these social problems dealt with. He told us to do it,” Thompson said.

“The government has its role, but we need to keep firmly in mind the role of the government, and the role of us as individuals and as Christians on the other.”

He received a round of applause for his answer, and went on to expand on the role of government in fighting AIDS and other diseases.

“I’m not going to go around the state and the country with regards to a serious problem and say that I’m going to prioritize that,” he said.

So the government has no business being involved in matters of public health and safety? Or does the 'global aids' problem not include the half a million or so in the US who have the disease?

Not sure what that has to do with Paul.

Paul has never stated that the government has no role in health of society.

Regardless, the majority of people supporting something means absolute shit to me. Majority of Germans supported the Holocaust. Majority of Americans supported ( and still do ) the bombings of Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Majority of Russians supported Communism. Majority of Chinese think that Mao was a great leader. Majority of Americans think that Lincoln was a great President.

etc, etc.

If you're asking about AIDS in particular, see this video. I believe AIDS falls under healthcare, so I'll address it from his healthcare perspective.

Americans have the best healthcare in the world. Some, however, choose not be insured; others cannot afford it. Every American should be able to get health insurance coverage that is affordable, fully accessible, and portable. Coverage should meet their individual needs and put them in control. Those who propose a one-size-fits-all Washington-controlled program ignore the cost, inefficiency, and inadequate care that such a system offers. Access to affordable, portable health care can be made available for all Americans without imposing new mandates or raising taxes. Current government programs must also be streamlined and improved so that those who truly need help can get the health care they need. I am committed to a healthcare system that:
  • Realigns programs and creates a system around individual consumers and patients by providing more information and more opportunities to choose affordable health care options that best meet their needs and those of their families.
  • Improves the individual health of all Americans by shifting to a system that promotes cost-effective prevention, chronic-care management, and personal responsibility
  • Modernizes delivery and administration of care by encouraging the widespread use of clinical best practices, medical information technology, and other innovations.
  • Increases competition and consumer choice while streamlining regulations through free-market solutions that benefit individuals and reduce costs for employers.
  • Promotes and speeds medical research and life-sciences innovation.
And from a federal involvement perspective, he's very adament about the individual states legislating most of their own laws.

Majority of Americans believe man is responsible for global warming

Actually, I can't even say that, because I don't think most Americans have bought into it. Nonetheless, I agree with your view on 'consensus'!

Global Warming... Well lets not get into that, it's a topic being used for political gain, 'nuff said. We haven't even be documenting weather patterns for more than 300 years, how are we suppose to know were in a serious climate change. The last recorded hottest day was back in 2000-2001. Right now I look out my window and it's 58 degrees, muggy and just finished raining in Los Angeles, while 5 years ago around winter time, it was 80 degrees and clear skies, farmers were worrying about crops.

As for the AIDS issue, it needs to be dealt with by the health care companies and government should be involved in the point of making sure that person is getting proper care and coverage. No one asks for AIDS and we should help them from suffering with pain. But we can't get rid of it, but we should try to reduce it. There needs to be more education on safe-sex and getting rid of the morality with that subject. People have sex from ages 12 all the way to ages 80, the more people aware, the safer they'll be. No one wants to die of AIDS, I certainly don't.
