In the United Stated, you are responsible to know the laws and participate in the electoral and judicial processes. If you do not know English, you cannot do these things.

English is a requirement for civil responsibilities, not employment.

Ever heard of jury duty? It is required. To be a juror, you must understand the law and the testimony. If you don't speak English, how can you do that?

If we hire translators for non-English jurors, they must be able to translate the precise meaning into another language. This is not possible.

Can you imaging legal scholars and linguists making a legal translation of our laws?

We would end up with two sets of rules.

At the beginning of your post you say that people need to understand the law (which is wrong) and then at the end you say it's too complex..............huh?

Anyway,

First, there are exemptions given all the time for jury duty. When I was sitting there at jury duty try-outs they gave a guy an exemption because he was deaf. Explain the difference between giving an exemption for deafness and for not speaking english.

Second, I've been on jury duty (next time I'll be "deaf" ). The judge and lawyers needed to understand the law. The jurors needed to know what the people testifying are saying. Are you saying it's impossible for a translator to take a story told in english and translate it to spanish? I taught a class in japan and for 2 weeks there were 30 people who listened to me say sometihng and then listened to the translator say it japanese. Occasionally they had questions, they got the rest. Translation is not rocket science.

Nope we have translations of documents and translators. Not knowing English doesn't prevent you from doing those things.

um, i know plenty of people who live here who don't speak english, at all. growing up in RI, i had a friend from Bolivia. her mom didn't speak a lick of english and she had been living here for 8 years.

you go into chinatown in Boston, and there are plenty of asians that don't speak any english. they dont need to because they've created their own communities here.

and if they're illegals or on the long road to citizenship, they wouldn't be called to jury duty anyway.

Yeah, but illegals are a non-factor to the question because they were not invited. Those on the path to citizenship should know English because they WILL be on the roster for jury duty and they have the responsibility to know the issues and people on the ballot so that they can make informed voter decisions.

If we plan to erode the INFORMED consent aspect of the democratic process, the democratic process becomes a FARCE and ceases to fulfill its intended function.
