You don't think the government has the ability to require certain burdens on people before it licenses them to drive?

You already have to pass an eyesight test, along with a road test, and knowledge of traffic laws before you're allowed to legally drive..

Not the same since you getting sick and dying doesn't cause you eyeballs to explode killing everyone around you, is it? (Or a bit less facetiously, getting sick and dying does kill anyone else)

More to the point, having poor eyesight can put other's at risk if you are driving. And if consumers were rational they'd probably get their eyesight checked yearly anyway if they have contacts just to maximize their ability to see and to prevent any unknown problems from sneaking up on them. But people aren't rational. Often times they put it off for years to save a few bucks. I don't really see a problem with only filling current prescriptions for contacts or other drugs. The rule of only letting a prescription be current for 1 year makes sense since how would a doctor know that the prescription is still a good one if he hasn't seen you for 2 or 3 or 5 years?

Look I understand and am fine with eye tests for licensing, but those are in place, you have to pass an eye test to renew your license. If I can read roadsigns with my current prescription I am not going to miss a 2 ton car. You can claim the car angle on this if you want, but I would bet you it had nothing to do with why prescriptions expire in one year.

How long before you have to pass another eyetest though?

One year intervals may not be the best solution, but I think there's what, at least 5 years between license renewals where you have to get the test here? I can't remember exactly.. might be more

I remember one time I broke my glasses and they wouldn't sell me any new glasses because my prescription was so old. I told them I was about to leave on a trip and all this other shit and eventually they gave them to me, but I still think that was bullshit

I think being able to purchase something like new glasses based on an older prescription is a little different (as in, it's far more intrusive and less acceptable) than telling people they have to get one every x number of years in order to keep their license valid though.

First of all, I do not think the government should have the power to require people to get a license to drive.

Second of all, mandating that people who wear contacts get yearly eye exams has nothing to do with licensing.

It has everything to do with licensing, if the government is going to regulate (through licensing) the ability to legally drive in this country, then they had better make sure those they license are able to see properly

Whether it's yearly, or every two years, or whatever the amount of time is that an average person's eye's change enough to warrant a new prescription

Um, the only people that have to get a "yearly" exam are those that have poor eyesight. As such, this is not about licensing, otherwise every citizen would have to get a yearly exam.
